Seriously? I don't personally feel comfortable using the n-word in any context, but as a historian I had to get used to seeing it on print pretty quickly. We're not fragile, and by hiding the n-word behind censorship is only going to dampen the amount of malevolence whites dealt to blacks. People are going to think it's not a big deal.
Even if I could understand replacing the word "nigger" in this case, I could never understand substituting "n-word". Use "n*****" if you absolutely have to, but don't use a word that awkward and dissonant.
Hahahaha, actually I got a "Recommendation" email for this book from Amazon.com when it came out. I loled, and didn't even open the thing. I didn't think the actual book title would say that, I thought Amazon was just trying to protect itself
( ... )
although I know others who do use it (as a "friendly" term) to friends
Same here. Heck, I have friends of various races who use the term nigger, usually in the form of, "Hey, my nigger!" with me and each other all the time.
I really don't see what all the fuss about saying nigger is anyway. If it's used as a slur, then why can't we say it when we can say a host of other slur terms? Random PC strikes again.
I can only laugh at publishers who are such pussies that they can't even print the word.
