It's astounding how awful this is

I rarely post about politics, but I am so appalled that I feel obligated to share this.

Politicians on both sides have lobbied for the parole of violent offenders.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. As a Philosophy major, I'm inclined to point out the fallacy of this argument-- "If X does it then I can't be blamed for doing it" type of logic. This is often employed by children when they've been caught doing something wrong, and attempt to justify it by pointing out someone else whose hands were also caught in the metaphorical cookie jar.

Just because Democrats have lobbied for violent offenders doesn't mean that Huckabee is less blameworthy for his gross incompetence and unethical actions in this particular case. I hold all politicians to the same ethical standard, and (if you've read the article) the particulars of Huckabee's actions and subsequent cover-up are, IMO, reprehensible. Had it been Obama or Clinton involved in this case, I would have had the exact same reaction.

I just looked up the Mumia case, having not heard of it before, and it appears as though his guilt was genuinely in doubt (though I readily admit I am no expert in this case). However, the serial rapist had CONFESSED to the crimes and Huckabee had letters from many women personally tesitfying to the rapist's guilt, including a face-to-face interview with one victim. Additionally, Huckabee had the police records and recorded confession in his possession. For this reason I don't think you can compare the two cases.

I knew there was a legitimate reason to loathe Huckabee - though before it was merely 'ass-backwards religious beliefs' and 'WTF Chuck Norris'; now I legitimately will do everything in my power to ensure that no one has any respect for him anymore, at least no one I know. I very rarely am moved to the point of being appalled, but this is one of those instances. (I suppose, though, on my part there's not much faith to lose in conservatives anymore...)

I totally know what you mean. It makes me feel so much better that someone else has the same reaction to this madness.

Wasn't it Huckabee who coined a word associated with gay sex that Jon Stewart parodied? Or was that some other conservative? hmm.

I will seriously cry my eyes out if a Republican wins the 2008 election.

I'll probably end up doing worse than that. (Were it not for the amazing colleges stateside, I'd up and move to Canada, no questions asked.) I mean, it just can't happen - people aren't NEARLY that stupid.

...Are they?

Right, WON'T HAPPEN. No way. Just...no. I'm super optimistic here.

I saw this on the news today. Ugh. Fortunately he's pretty low poll-wise right now. But really, what on earth did he gain from this rapist's release?

The Christian right-wing was lobbying for the rapist's release.

I didn't know it was on the news today... good. In a way I actually hate Huckabee more than Bush for this because it was just unimaginably devious and low. Bush's incompetence doesn't seem as malicious, somehow.

That's because his PR people do an extraordinary job of making it seem that way, lol. I mean, Huckabee's even more of a scumbag than Bush, but Bush's henchmen are probably still more devious yet. *shudders at the thought*

Unless you watch Fahrenheit 9/11. I know that documentary is way over the top, but it doesn't stop me from feeling physically ill.

Forgive me for my American ignorance, but when is the presidential election?

No forgiveness necessary!! :)

A presidential election takes place every four years. The 2008 election will be held in early November. :)

Here was me thinking it was this November. We just had ours, and for some reason I thought they were the same year. Thanks for clearing that up.

Wow, I don't understand how someone could even think about pardoning such a horrible person. You'd have to be truly misogynistic to disregard all those women's warnings and believe that the guy wouldn't kill again. What I really truly don't understand is how someone could think that he didn't pose a threat to society anymore. The point of jail is not just to rehabilitate people; it's also supposed to be a punishment for what they did--and what he did earns him a nice seat at the right hand of Satan.

I have to figure out how to re-register as a Democrat. I only registered as a Republican because my mother was standing over my shoulder at the DMV.
