NaNoWriMo 2008: Day 8
-=The Keyholder and Sophie together, Part III=-
“So we have keys,” the man was explaining to Sophie. “They all unlock some door or another, just the way any proper key should. But you see, its the doors that aren't always so proper. Your home, for instance. Most of the doors here are all incredibly useless to me, though I expect I could unlock any number of them anyway...”
Sophie had been listening with rapt attention for the better half of the day. Crazy or not, the man from her refrigerator was spouting off (in a rather droll tone of voice, unfortunately) some incredibly interesting things. So far, he had already told her a little bit about where he was from, and about places that seemed highly unlikely, but were apparently connected to everywhere. He had also told her a few things of walking through these places, and what some of them were like. And just now, he was explaining how a person could get to such places. For example, how he himself was able to walk through a bartender, and wind up in somebody's kitchen, in a different part of the world. (What she didn't know was that he had tactfully chosen to leave out how incredibly messy the whole ordeal had been.)
She was fascinated, so she tried very hard to ignore the fact that he had just told her that her doors were useless.
“And where I'm from,” the man continued, utterly unaware of the faint scowl Sophie was trying to hide, “There's rather a lot of people with rather a lot of keys that they carry around. I suppose they're all given some to be responsible for, or something like that. It must be their job. Or their hobby. I...don't actually know for sure. This is just the way it's been since I was born, and before that, so I suppose I've taken the details for granted. It's a bit like how one grows up speaking a particular language, and so is never forced to question the grammar of it until they're faced with a foreigner. You understand, don't you?”
Sophie nodded.
