Congratulations! You are giving birth to a set of adorable twins! However, it turns out that the twins are conjoined in such a way that would make separation surgery life threatening. The doctors tell you that in order to attempt the surgery, it needs to be done when the children are young, ideally preformed when the twins are between the ages ( Read more... )

IDK.

This post is an asshole for making me cry though. And I'm going to give my twins the hugs of their lives when they wake up.

That poor family. Jesus.

I've been reading about them since they were born. They live about 30 minutes from my home and are the same age as my oldest boy.

My heart broke when I read this yesterday.

I would do it. I'd pray, and it would kill me, but I would probably end up doing it.

I'm not sure how early they are able to tell if the twins are conjoined, but tbh if it was early enough I wouldn't have continued the pregnancy. I don't think I could have gone full term knowing that one of my babies wouldn't make it through childhood.

That's so sad.

They found out at 12 weeks. *sigh* I am only glad I've never been in such a difficult position.

I wouldn't continue the pregnancy either. I couldn't handle it emotionally, and with my own health issues, I'm not certain my husband and I could handle it physically or financially either. x.X

I'm a little confused... If these girls shared a heart, what was the plan? Was one getting a donor heart? What?

I think I'd want to separate them. And if the risk of losing one was so high, I think I would want to do it when they were quite young, not older.

But man, what a crappy situation no matter what the outcome.

I don't know for sure, but my guess is they decided that instead of knowing both of them would die, they wanted to try and give one of them a chance. Sacrificing one instead of both?

But I don't know, I didn't follow the story or anything.

Most likely. And, I think it's pretty common for one conjoined twin to be better off medically than the other... they've got the full compliment of organs, or theirs are in better shape, and such. The weaker twin will, sometimes, be sacrificed in that case.

They were both getting donor hearts. The shared heart was two or three times the size of a normal heart. It would not have fit in a normal sized chest. Also, it was failing.
