2 in 1 book review

After years reading in the SF genre, I finally got to a Barsoom book.  Like many of the books that fall outside my usual reading, this one landed on my TBR pile because it was part of the Masterpieces of Science Fiction series.  This particular volume included At the Earth's Core and A Princess of MarsWhile running the risk of seeming ( Read more... )

I did start a book in the series, but, shamefully, I was not able to finish it.

Heh. I was fortunate in reading the first one - I don't think this is a series that lends itself to just jumping in in the middle, as it's not written well enough for that kind of treatment.

I barely remember them now, but I read them about 44-45 years ago and enjoyed them. I used to play Martian Princess during recess, invisible spear and all ;) yes, it had to be an invisible spear. Even then, they quailed at children brandishing big sticks in the playgrounds at schools.

Now that you mention it, I bought A Princess of Mars for my Kindle when the John Carter movie came out, but never got around to reading it. This makes me think it's about time I did! So when the semester is over (two weeks!), and the exams are graded and the final grades are turned in, I'm headed to Barsoom. :)
