Well, I just gotta rant a bit about Instant Messenger etiquette

Re #1, I actually found it helpful to "lead" the other person, by doing something like:

Random Furry: Hello
Giza: Hi, can I help you?

That way, I implicitly tell them that I'm willing to have a conversation with them, and most of the time it gets them talking. :-)
