Btw my grandma' was in Tivoli during the war. She is born in Rome, but during Allies' bombarding of the city (where she lost her father), she was send to her family in the country-side.
She was really young (class '38) but she remember the large number of trooper in the zone.

Wow. It's so interesting to hear the stories of people who actual went through it... especially civilians. That must have been such a scary, unsettling time for your grandma. If I recall correctly, the only person in my family involved in the war was my granddad. He worked with planes, I believe.
