-when we first see Gene, he cuts his finger (it doesn't look like special effects, I think he actually did hurt himself), and we hear him mutter a muffled "shit" through chattering teeth. -the box of stuff that Gene delivers to Spina is all packed up in a rations crate. -the large amount of Christian (read: Catholic) imagery used.
What the hell was up with the German soldier they take prisoner? He was crouching, then walking weirdly
From what I remember, he wandered behind Easy's lines to take a crap, and Winters let him finish and then took him prisoner. So he was probably crouching, etc. cause he really had to go.
When Buck tells Bill about his girl… it breaks my heart really badly. ):
Me too! You can tell he's cracking a bit more here. And I love the detail that it looks like NMcD in the picture too!

Ahah, yeah, I looked at the scene and I was like - «it almost looks like he's... no, can't be - why the hell would he go behind enemy lines just to take a crap? A bit risky, isn't it?»
I don't think he MEANT to get behind Easy's lines to do that....just that he got away from his OWN lines and wandered over to Easy by accident...got lost :P
So, i'm going to point out a few things that have always confused me about this episode, and hopefully someone a lot smarter/more adept at googling than myself will be able to answer it for me.
-What does the OP mean? I think operation point, but why would Gene be told to "go see Toye in the OP"? Isn't he just in a foxhole? Is that just an uber-imporant foxhole? Confusion.
-What DID Babe cut himself on when he yanked Gene out of the hole? I thought it might have been his scissors (<3) but those would have been in his bag, no? I also thought that it might have been one of the syrettes, but there would have been a cap over the needle, so unless he had the cap off why would it have been sharp? (PS i love that scene.)
-What's the deal with the supplies drop? Why did they start firing when they all ran out happily into the clearing? I'm with Gene, I thought they were American planes, too.
OP means outpost. If you look, you'll see that that's not an ordinary foxhole, it's the same one, with cover all around it, that various people take turns occupying while watching that part of the forest (the line).
EDIT: I probably might as well add that "OP" doesn't refer to the foxhole, but to the station, wherever it may be, where guys are sent to watch something. In "Carentan" Harry yells to "get the OP in", but that wasn't as fixed a position as here, on a static front. And in "The Patrol" the remnants of 2nd Platoon occupy OP #2, watching that stretch of the river.
one of the guys gives Father Maloney a hug. Bless.
I think that's Babe.
- Babe's got a horizontal stripe on the back of his helmet. I didn't know he was an NCO.
Oh? He's a private, the last time I looked. Maybe he swiped Bill's helmet when he wasn't looking.
ETA: Oh yeah, and a question for any of those Doc experts out there - one of the major plotlines of this episode is the growing friendship between Doc and Babe, and I was wondering if there was much historical basis for that. I've read a bit about Babe and Spina being buddies (Philly boys for life and all that), but not much about Babe and Doc. But then, Doc gets surprisingly little time in a lot of the books, at least the ones I've read.
I don't know if there's much factual basis on Gene and Babe's friendship. You'd probably have to ask Babe himself to get the whole story. Babe and Spina were real good buddies, as well as Gene and Spina (Shane Taylor stated in an interview that Spina told him that he and Gene were best friends).
Which draws the question of when and where between Crossroads and Bastogne did Gene pick up a Tanker jacket? And what on earth happened to his old jacket? Then again, you can see by the time he gets to the Smokey scene, that his sleeves are all bloody. Maybe his old jacket got too bloody. And he does have a tendancy to take clothes from the dead (when needed, not like Frank's watch obsession), so maybe that's where he got it.
Also, it comes back to the lack of insignia on his shoulder you were talking about earlier, Jim. In earlier episodes, he had his rank and eagle patch as well as his red cross armband on his left shoulder (and definately scissors in his shirt pocket in the picture i'm looking at from Carentan <3) but then by the time we get to the opening scenes of Bastogne, he just has his armband.

Things from this rewatch:
-The special effects here were amazing. I didn't realize until I saw the Making of Band of Brothers documentary that this was done inside ( ... )

This is true. His first wife was an English war bride.
-Poor Roe, trying to help everybody but can't help himself. It must have been tough, being a medic under these conditions.
It was exceedingly tough to be a medic, especially under those conditions.
