Missives written on tissues from an airship in a hurricane

A catch-up meme stolen from umadoshi:

So what have you been up to? / Major life changes? Same old same old?
I pretty much spent the summer fretting, which as we all know, is completely pointless. But what can I say? I'm amazing at it >:/ I'm still adjusting to working from home, and I'm trying to figure out how to balance a reasonable amount of stress ( Read more... )

to do list, criminal minds, linkity-link-link, stop the world - i wanna get off, the mind is a terrible thing to taste, too smart for the semicolon, blurgleweegsnazzer, unsolicted opinions, this is why we can't have nice things, fandom, squee-o-meter, person of interest, friends, meme, supernatural, rude!, misty watercolor memories, write something you miserable fuck

Your entire fandom rant is one of the reasons I think we get along. Because I feel the same way. I'm lucky because I have friends I can get together with and have conversations with, but there's so much out there that's just whining anymore rather than talking about the fandom. People hate watch. Or don't see the difference between a character and an actor. And my brain just explodes. It's why I love LJ. The conversations we have the chance to have.

I'm going to steal this later. I've got to, you know, go do my job now.

Yes, to all of that ;) My first experience with online fandom was so mind-blowingly wonderful that it has ruined me forever. I always compare every new experience against that first group of amazing, chatty, welcoming people *sobs*. I have found a handful of folks in my current fandoms who are good eggs (mostly, and perhaps surprisingly, in SPN), but fan conversations are going the way of the Dodo.

Go work, darling ;) Must not let on to The Man how blah day jobs can be....

Somehow, I thought typing that would require less typing than the actual title, but I don't think it really made much of a difference. Anyway, I haven't actually had a chance to read it yet (work and insomnia are not a nice combo), but I saw a line about a PowerPoint presentation, which made me think that this particular (former) WIP was years in the making. Yes?

Did I talk about a WIP with a Powerpoint presentation? I don't remember that... I use PPT every day, so I might have been talking about something else. Anyway, this one came together remarkably fast - like, in under 3 weeks, so whatever fic you were thinking of, I think it's safe to say that this one isn't it ;) I hope you like it anyway.

You were lamenting a particular PP you'd just completed or were struggling with, and started talking about how you should make a story completely in PP or something, and I think I said you should have Garcia make one explaining why Reid/Prentiss was a good idea. I distinctly remember there being a conversation about Garcia making one and it being about Reid/Prentiss. But I also know it was years ago.

LOL! Holy crap, that would require sooooo many screengrabs XD I think that I even went so far as to sign up for a screen capture site because a fan had posted shots from 8 seasons-worth of episodes, and then I thought 'Am I really gonna scroll through nearly 200 episodes of screengrabs to do this?' <- I think that spelled the end of that particular madness. Because I'm a Powerpoint designer, I don't think that I could make myself do a half-assed job of it.

I am so fucking tired of fretting. I want to give up on the lifeboat drills and just bloody live until the alarms go off... Erm, yes, I may share this issue.

I've tried Tumblr a few times, but it just makes me start feeling like that old man you mention and I can't, I just can't, particularly given my (un)naturally high levels of facetiousness. well that and the spoilers. Ack!

THERE MUST BE MOAR PENNY DREADFUL NOWWWWWWWWWW!

Re: Penny Dreadful - I KNOW! Holy crap, I loved that show after season 1, but season 2 has addicted me. How it doesn't collapse under the weight of its own ridiculous seriousness, I'll never know. But I love them all *squishes them all tightly to my bosom*.

Ugh, the fretting. The worst part is that you can convince your conscious mind to give up on it but then your gut goes ahead and makes its own damned decisions >:/

I keep thinking that I should try Tumblr (apparently CM is much more active there) but the idea of dedicating time to figuring out how to use the site effectively makes me grumpy. I SO am that angry old guy down the street...

It's funny because I've never been this fannish about something where I'm just not interested in fan fic for it... probably because it IS deliciously excellent fan fic in its own right. :D

In my case it settles into my neck and shoulders and I get to the stage where I barely turn my head. Good times... not.

Tumblr is actually pretty easy to use, well as easy as setting up an LJ. Then you have to work out who to follow and what tags to look at. The problem, for me at least, is that there's no other way to filter it. So if you put something on the tag anyone can see it and beat a path to your door to tell YOU HOW HORRIBLE YOU ARE! There's also no way to have a conversation other than reblogging with comments which isn't the same thing at all. It's like yelling into the void and then hoping for evidence that someone heard you. This could just be me and my grumpy knickers though as other people seem to love it.

I avoided Tumblr for the whole of the second half of Hannibal due to spoilers and have just gone back, for the pretty, but really I'm only there for a few tags and never look at what friends are posting/reblogging.

I can't wait for you to watch season 3 of Hannibal so I can see your reaction!

I agree with you about fandom - there's very little conversation about. Although I suppose that might just be me, since I don't feel I'm particularly in any one fandom now. And most of those I 'talk' to on LJ don't particularly share my fandoms. So it becomes more generally chat, which is fine, but not the same.

I know! I was all bouncy about it and then realized my OnDemand service erased the first 4 episodes of season 3 before I saw them. Buggers. Now, I have to wait for Netflix to upload them.

Fandommmm, how I miss it... :(
I was feeling so incredibly nostalgic and sad this evening over my first few years of LJ fandom (2006-2009ish). Some of the best days of my life. I don't know how people are getting that out of tumblr, but I guess they are. sigh.

And I really need to watch Hannibal. And a whole bunch of other stuff.

xx

There was a link to an article about evolving fandom platforms on the last OTW blog update, and the linked article listed Tumblr as the current number one fan site, but that LJ provided the most flexibility when it came to security, variety, ease-of-use, and community. Their other suggestions (Facebook, Dreamwidth, Twitter etc.) didn't really make the cut in those areas.

My first 4 years here were awesome - I miss that. But my account here is permanent and I re-wrangle my preferred setings with every update, so I guess I'm in it for the long haul regardless of where fandom skips off to.

Watch Penny Dreadful too. And sense8 and Daredevil (if you have Netflix).
