I have a new favorite, improbable word: Gondwanatheria

This came about after reading a news article describing the recent discovery of a "huge" mammal skull fossil in Madagascar (SPOILER ALERT: the term "huge" is a bit flexible here). Given the age and location of the skull fossil, this previously unknown mammal qualifies as a gondwanatherian. ( Read more... )

wait...what?, profound or creepy?, stories from the far side, linkity-link-link, pictures, art, things that make you go hmmm, science, news

...I'm going to have to look a little closer at the deer who hang out in my back garden.

Is your backyard in Afghanistan? If so, you may have greater concerns in front of you...

No, but it's a swamp. I'm never quite sure what might turn up from there...

I cannot say gondwanatherian... possibly because I've had a beer on an empty stomach. The deer looks cute too. Um, how strong is this beer?

The fanged deer is cute in a completely scary way. They use the fangs to fight for lady deer, apparently.

"Bust out yer fangs for me, baby. Prove that you love me!"

Maybe I've had some of your beer...

My best friend is Dr. Krause's oldest son. When I asked him about the giant rodentia skull, he just sort of shrugged. "Yeah, Dad sets a high bar."

New species are old hat in the Krause family, it seems.

Nope, he's a writer and gamer, and consequently feels like he has big shoes to fill. *smacks him upside the head*

ENORMOUS RAT SKULL! :D

Well then, he has nothing to worry about. Comparing those two careers would be like measuring apples and lawn darts against one another.

Dude, did you know I have that Pangea poster hanging in my bedroom?

Also, my twitter feed was all vampire flying frogs this, vampire blenny that, vampire deer (okay, fangs =/= vampire, but close enough) last week.

Perhaps that's where I got the idea to look up the Pangaea poster *minouette decor has unconsciously settled in my long term memory*

I don't know what it is about the musk deer but the look just fascinates me ;)
