A Memo To The World That I'll Never Send

Hello World! Blythe here...

Listen, I know that we're all in a terrible hurry these days, and that technology is supposed to help us manage that, but I have a few requests for the tech-savvy and luddite alike:

1. Pressing 'Forward' when viewing an email on your phone with an attachment in the email trail, doesn't mean that the recipient will ( Read more... )

First, I'm sorry: it sounds exhausting. Second, yes, manners. But it isn't just the careless clients; it seems to be everyone. I posted an ad for a part-time babysitter last night for which I've now received about 15 applications. Half of them are missing all or most punctuation. Only three are clear and intelligible. And these are job applications! And it's not as if I posted on craigslist or something -- I used the site the University recommends and from which they buy some kind of corporate subscription.

It seems that technology has given us the excuse of being rude and lazy. I routinely get snippy, sloppy emails from people with whom I only have a professional relationship. I find it extremely rude, but I remind myself that the medium lends itself so easily to misunderstanding that its to be expected. Also, I am appalled that people now affix email signatures that say something like: "sent from my iPhone - please excuse all typos". Ummm, no. I understand that the iPhone touchpad keyboard is problematic, but a little care and proofreading before hitting 'send' is all that's required to avoid these gaffes.

Spelling, grammar, and general attitude matter even in this age - perhaps you might send a n ote to this referring site about advising it's job seekers about proper submission etiquette. Yeah, it might be dismissed but, really, people need to be re-taught this sort of thing.

Well, I'm afraid it's just a screening device for me. Pretty Darwinian, but maybe the careful writers will win out in the end.

I loathe and despise texting. Mothers at the parks seem to want to text and it takes me forever to type into the phone. Especially with E hanging on my arm wanting to join in. I don't bother with punctuation there. I'm lucky when I can prevent the ridiculous. As soon as I can, I insist on email or phone calls. Texts. Aaarh.

Texting is a different matter as there is a character limitation. I text with MB and friends but never, ever text with a client. If clients choose to respond to their emails via their phones, they need to use care - not treat it like a WER U @? situation. *eyeroll*
