Hawaii and Solo Travel Fears

Sep 01, 2009 17:03

In less than 13 days I'm going to be in Hawaii. While there is excitement at this prospect, there is also a certain amount of fear, because this is (to my memory) the first time I've traveled solo, as in, it 100% up to me how I'm going to spend my days. I have always had someone who traveled with me, or someone I knew at the destination who would ( Read more... )

Look up bookstores and haunt those. Take a book and go to the beach, or a book and a pad and pencil. But go, walk around and go where the winds take you. It's an adventure so enjoy yourself.

The nifty thing about walking around is you can just pop in whatever place catches your eye. But start with bookstores. Even if you don't make it to one, at least you have a starting place.

Thank you! That's a good idea, checking out the bookstores. I love bookstores. I do plan to have some time just walking around, but I'm also looking into a couple of tour-y things.

I do think I'm a little more shy when I'm solo. Being with people I'm comfortable with helps me come out of my shell in talking to strangers, because I know my friends have my back.

But being able to make your schedule is definitely a huge plus to solo travel, as far as I can tell.

I bet Taiwan was fantastic. I would love to get myself over to Asia, but I don't know when that's going to happen.

the first time i went to hawaii it was by myself and it was one of the best vacations i've ever had. i was there for seven days and prepared by making a list of the two or three must-do activities (botanical garden, helicopter tour, international market). the rest of my time i filled sitting at the beach with a book, wandering around town shopping, taking photos (practically everything is a glorious tropical photo op over there).

i've only been to the big island and kauai, but if you're going to one of those, i'd be happy to point you to some high points.

Thank you. I am going to the Big Island. I only have three days to myself, but would love to hear your suggestions. Most of my time will be on the Hilo side.
