Though "She ran away to the gypsies!" works a treat.
The roma got it nasty everywhere...just like tinkers in Ireland. It's obscene. They play amazing music, though - if you have a chance to nab some on CD, this one would love a fix.

I'm working in Timisoara, Romania with a group called Roma Women: For Our Children. It's a center that offers a kindergarten in the morning and after-school help and activities for Roma children. They also appear to do a lot of social work in terms of support, advocacy, and advice.
What I've witnessed in terms of the programs has been basic vocabulary, counting, and art for the youngest and homework help for the older children. They also do dance.
I'm supposed to be running theatre workshops (and maybe a project) with the older children, aid daily with the kindergarten, teach English classes for adult university students and Roma kids (separately), and now it looks like I might be doing some research/fundraising/letter writing.
