Yes that analogy is quite appropriate and so true-- I've used very similar descriptions in therapy and when trying to explain what really is often unexplainable to people who have not lived with it.

I've been ignoring the news so had not heard about Robin Williams and it is so heart breaking. I know he struggled with addiction(s) in the past as well as depression.... Another bright talent lost. He'll live on in his work of course but to know his brilliance will no longer offer new laughter/tears/anything to the world is tragic.

I'm very sad about Robin Williams, too. I had heard years ago that he was manic/depressive but I don't know if that's accurate.

I think this serves as a timely reminder that no matter how upbeat and fun-loving a person may seem, you never really know what's bubbling just under the surface.
