101 tasks in 1001 days

Feb 17, 2006 11:21

Back in January I saw arachne posting a list of 101 things she pledged to do within the next 1001 days. Like an alternative to New Year's Resolutions, and a more fun one in several ways, I think. You have longer than a year to think about the big things and the ones that involve lots of planning, but also it's not a case of having to keep something up for ( Read more... )

Sorry to say that the people I know near to BM are of the ongoing cliche that it's not what it used to be, and those outside of BM observing it that it's very much not a match for the ideals it presents, more disney than hippie. That said, an opportunity to enjoy the playa at that time of year shouldn't be missed, it's a awesome.

The choose your own adventure sounds amusing though, I don't know which way your geek credentials lie, but I may well be happy to help.

As for horses, I beleive I've mentioned before, any excuse is good for me, either if you want another body to investigate a new stables, or if you want to join me at my normal place in richmond park.

15. Go over land and sea to the Arctic Circle

If you do this one summer, I’ll come with you.

28. Do Random Tube-Travelling Day and write up the results

What is Random Tube-Travelling Day?

I always intended to do something in a similar vein on buses - though to be honest it was less random, because I hoped to do a circuit round London.

One day...

Do you catch the first train that comes? What if the station has six platforms? How do you decide which station to get off at? By drawing a card? Tossing a coin? Do you go outside and take photos, or do you stay in the system all day? Do you leave a trail? Does it take place on 4th February every year? Do you pick a cute man/woman/badger in your carriage and resolve to get off at the same station? What if they resolve to follow you? Are you allowed to take the DLR? South West Trains from Vauxhall to Waterloo? A 133 from Brixton to Elephant & Castle? What happens if you bump into a fellow Random Tube-Traveller?

That's an awesome list -- I'd count it a lifetime's achievement if I managed to even start just one of the creative projects you've committed to finishing! Can't even begin to do more than say 'wow' to most of it, and wish you luck/energy/etc for achieving your goals.

At the more practical end of the tasks, though:

69. Get rid of all clothes I feel ugly in

This is something I need to do as well, and not just "clothes I feel ugly in" but also "clothes that never quite go with anything" and "clothes that just aren't really me any more" and "clothes that actually don't fit" and so on. I was thinking of having a "bring and buy" (or just "bring and take"!) session where people can bring clothes they don't want, get second opinions, swap the clothes they don't want for clothes they do want, etc. Like the sale-and-giveaway thing you had before going travelling, kind of thing, but just for clothes ( ... )

For myself by myself? No, I'm not at all auteurish about the contents of my wardrobe :)

And I see what you mean about all the other categories of clothes too. I do hang on to some of the 'not me any more' kind just in case I ever get the chance to be that particular me again, like certain bits of goth PVC, but there are certain old-me clothes I would be thrilled to see the back of.

And wrt the awe, lifetime achievement, etc - well, we'll see how far I actually get :)

This is a wonderful list, and it reminds me of an intention I keep having, of keeping track of stuff I read/do/make/accomplish/learn etc.

And 73 reminds me of a favour I wanted to ask you... Would you mind calligraphing my Christmas poem, so I can hang it on a wall and admire it? I'll happily barter any of my own skills in exchange - the useful ones probably come down to CSSing, cooking, knitting and editing/proofreading. (I love the idea of bartering skills like this :-)

Oh man. I'd love to.

It might be a mixture of typography and calligraphy - what would you think about that?

Predictably, I love typography, too :-)

I suppose it would be dreadfully wrong to work off someone else's list, but now I don't think I could make my own because there'd be too much overlap and it would look like I'd just nicked it. Ah well.

You should open your list to all contributions.

Everybody's list overlaps with everyone else's to some extent, as far as I can see. I nicked tasks off a wide variety of people, so I see no problem whatsoever with you nicking some off me.

I'm a hedgehog, anyway, not a fox like you. "The fox has many things to do, the hedgehog one big one."
