Grandma died at 4:30pm Indy time. Dad called me at 4:30pm our time to tell me. There will be a gathering in the morning to discuss funeral arrangements, and Dad will call me by 8am or GMT to tell me what's going on

Just thought I'd suggest pushing the airline for bereavement fares. I know you said you have to consider finances, and this might help.
