The Secret to Life

Is liver and onions. No joke. It hasn't stopped my usual winter grumpiness from kicking in, but boy, does that stuff make me feel awake. It just clears out the brain fog like nobody's business. And it's cheap as hell because no one wants to eat it - like $2-3 per pound at the farmer's market. Now I just need to find a way to make it more ( Read more... )

It is not only not bad for you, it's actually incredibly nutritious. You probably shouldn't eat it every day, because it has so many vitamins and minerals that you could get an overdose of something (this can happen with vitamin A, at least). But for once or twice a week, it's great. And hell, if you like rare steaks and don't mind a sort of bloody taste, you'd probably like liver.

Also, if you eat much liver, you should also get or supplement plenty of vitamin D. The two are supposed to go together, and if you're vitamin D deficient, you're at a much higher risk of vitamin A toxicity. Or so the internet tells me. And eat liver from healthy, pasture-fed animals, or else there might be some other kind of toxicity from the animal having processed a lot of crap food and antibiotics.

Wow, cool....I never would have guessed! I've never known anyone who ate liver regularly, so I didn't know it could actually have noticeable effects on mood/mental alertness. I honestly can't remember if I've ever had it...if I did, I must have been really, really young.

I like how you summarized other life secrets at the bottom. I'm taking notes. :)

Yeah, it's not exactly popular these days. I get the impression it used to be, though. It doesn't taste spectacular, though it does look reassuringly like beef. But it seriously perked me up like crazy. You know how my grantees had that deadline and I had to get a bunch of stuff done all at once? I was incredibly productive that week because I'd just had some liver on Sunday. It would have been so much harder otherwise.

I hope you find those useful! I certainly do. Lol.
