Studying lions over the past several months has allowed me to reexamine my life through their eyes. I don't want to overstate it, but what I learned has changed a great many ideas I had previously held dearly.
Chief among those is this: that the old hacksaw that the unexamined life is not worth living is a lie. In fact I'm convinced it is responsible for more misery in the world than any other. The truth is that the unexamined life is the only life worth living. (By that I'm not advocating ignorance, only ignorance about one's own psyche. A interest in the outside world is still vital.) No, what I'm saying is that any self-reflection is doomed to failure. There is no answer at the bottom of your mind that can explain your actions. Instead it is better to not even look, and instead, like the lion, to take a nap under a shade tree and dream of a savannah stacked to the horizon with buffalo.
