I last posted a proper recs post on August 8th. This is what I've come up with since then, minus the emergency recs I made earlier in the week. I swear I've gotten things done besides reading fic and watching vids (it just doesn't look like I could have possibly had time).
Quite a few of the Review Notes are on the short side, but this post took forever to make up! The sad part is that there would be more, but I also started
The Passage yesterday and, thanks to a few long car rides, I'm several hundred pages into it. There's more than several hundred still to go; it's a damned long story.
.: Avengers :.
Captain America/Iron Man
An Ever Fixed Mark |
seanchai and
elspethdixon [Steve/Tony, PG-13, 71.174 words]
Summary: Loki accidentally turns Tony into a woman. Steve is less than thrilled. Hijinks ensue.
Review Note: I've concluded that Tony is quite the angst bunny, and as that seems to be something borne out in canon for this fandom (what little I've gleaned outside the movies), it works for me as a characterization. Tony is cocky and arrogant, has lousy self-esteem and a strong tendency towards depression. It's an interesting mix that manages to come through loud and clear in this case without feeling over the top. Steve's general outlook on life makes for a great foil, although things start off with him still pissed off ('disappointed' in Steve's world) over the Armor Wars. This is set just a bit after that (chronologically, although the time period is the present day) and features a Tony in recovery without all his bridges mended, though the ruins have at least stopped smoldering and reconstruction has begun. Also has some great appearances by other members of the Avengers, notably Jan, Hank, and Wanda. As someone who is still easily confused by the morass of canon available, I found it quite accessible, much of the necessary information being conveyed in-text for readers like me without feeling like excessive exposition.
For America |
autoschediastic [Steve/Tony, NC-17, 4.915 words]
Summary: "Tony, for the good of the country, we should get married."
Review Note: A very sweet PWP. :)
Art
Steve/Tony Fanart |
simmysim [Steve/Tony, PG]
Summary: Sometimes I doodle at work when there is nothing to do.
Review Note: A very fun style.
Thor
Athelas |
astolat [Thor/Loki, NC-17, 19.324 words]
Summary: There was a sharp and bitter edge crept into the words, a reminder that not all was well: that Thor still had a brother, but not a friend.
Review Note: This is a very good Thor/Loki fic, although Tony's scenes kind of steal the show. Thor and Loki's differing view points are on dynamic display.
Slipping from Skin to Skin |
entangled_now [Thor/Loki, NC-17, 2.480 words]
Summary: Loki has never been afraid to change his skin.
Review Note: I have a certain kink for Loki's mobility of form, which this fic takes advantage of.
Raising Loki |
skiesovergideon [Gen, PG, 4.791 words]
Summary: Frost giant babies are not the same as Asgardians. Frigga and Odin learn this the hard way.
Review Note: This is just pretty darn cute, with a wee!Thor to boot.
Thor/Supernatural
Comic
[Two Loki] |
made_of_tin [Gen, PG]
Summary: Plummeting into the abyss between the worlds, Loki manages to crash into another Loki, plummeting the other way.
Review Note: Probably an obvious-to-everyone-else crossover that I didn't think of until this comic came along! Gorgeous illustrations with an amusing Gabriel - this is one that makes me giggle.
.: Criminal Minds/Harry Potter :.
In Darkness |
mhalachai [Gen, PG, 3.721 words]
Summary: To the world around him, Aaron Hotchner is a (somewhat) normal FBI agent, with a somewhat normal son and a moderately normal life. He's never told his team who he was... before. When he was known as Aaron Black.
Review Note: Works quite well, actually. Deals with that under represented minority in HP canon - the squib.
.: CSI/Pern :.
Pausing to Wonder |
jedibuttercup [Gen-ish (ref Grissom/Sara), PG, 1.252 words]
Summary: It turned its head then to look at him, slitting open multiply-layered eyelids to fix him with jewel-bright, faceted eyes; Gil had never seen anything like it.
Review Note: Silly perhaps, but an entertaining concept nonetheless.
.: CSI/Buffy the Vampire Slayer :.
Unexpected Evidence |
jedibuttercup [Gen-ish (ref Grissom/Sara), PG, 1.200 words]
Summary: Whether or not he was ready for it, Gil had a responsibility to this girl, and he was never one to shirk a responsibility.
Review Note: Jedibuttercup frequently does short, crossover one-shots and I, rather obviously, have been catching up on a few of them. This is another random combination that has interesting connotations and leaves me speculating about story lines.
.: Generation Kill :.
Brad's Eternal Happiness in Fou- Three Easy Steps, by Ray Person |
alethialia [Brad/Nate, R, 2.365 words]
Summary: Ray knows best. No, seriously, don't argue.
Review Note: All the action in scene is gen, but the overall set-up is Brad/Nate. I love Ray. The dialogue is killer here and lightning fast.
All I Can Do is Sing this Song for You |
bergann [Gen, PG-13, 2.299 words]
Summary: Ray finds the egg in a run-down shed in a shitty little village suspected of hiding members of the Taliban. (AU)
Review Note: Temeraire fusion. Ray is such a wonderfully bad influence on an impressionable young dragon.
.: Haven :.
Reference
Haven, Maine Wiki .: Inception :.
Here's to the End of Our Sanity |
dearprose [Arthur/Eames, PG-13, 7.719 words]
Summary: Arthur suffers from OCD. Eames finds out and tries to play the hero. Or something.
Review Note: I really liked this fic and I think it has a good representation of how obsession can disrupt your life. Mostly I appreciated Eames' POV and his general lack of self-delusion.
The Boy Who Spoke with Ghosts |
avocadolove [Arthur/Eames, PG-13, 21.794 words]
Summary: No one suspects Arthur. He's too practical, too organized, too sensible to believe in the supernatural.
Review Note: Arthur used to be known as Cole Sear - a fantastic fusion with The Sixth Sense that I started reading as a WiP and I was particularly pleased to discover had been completed. Throws in some interesting Eames back story and just does a lot of interesting things in the course of exploring what Cole would be like when he was all grown-up.
.: Leverage :.
The Tin Man |
james [Eliot/Hardison, PG-13, 21.070 words]
Summary: Cyborg AU. Eliot was created in a lab, a cybernetic soldier. Now he's trying to learn how to be human, finding a family and falling in love along the way.
Into Bronze |
james [Eliot/Hardison, PG, 2.580 words]
Summary: Sequel to "Tin Man," the Cyborg AU. Eliot realizes that Hardison doesn't know nearly as much about him as Hardison claims.
Review Note: These stories have a great back story and an interesting OC.
.: Sherlock Holmes :.
How to Tame Your Dragon |
mad_maudlin [John/Sherlock, NC-17, 12.859 words]
Summary: Sorcerer!Sherlock sets out to trap himself a pet dragon. Said dragon turns out to be far more interesting than he initially anticipated.
Review Note: Not a crossover or fusion at all, but a fascinating au. Mind the warnings (D/s elements). John's a bit more prickly here, a bit gruffer, but it fits with his nature.
Justice |
cat_77 [Gen, PG, 625 words]
Summary: Criminals commit crimes, and the Yarders see that justice is served.
Review Note: I want to call this an 'id fic', and since it fits with my id, then it works just fine for me. For those who like a Sherlock with a particularly John protective aspect.
Faerie-Touched |
blind_author [John/Sherlock, PG-13, 9.366 words]
Summary: AU. In a world of sorcerers and magic, Sherlock is a Faerie-born and John, lacking any kind of magical talent, often seems a bit out of place. But he has a gift all his own...
Review Note: Some fascinating world building, and watching John get one up on everyone is pretty darn great, too. :P
.: Star Trek :.
Certain |
waldorph [Kirk/Spock, R, 5.232 words]
Summary: Spock will only ever be certain of one thing.
Review Note: The wrap up to the amazing
Illogical series!
Art
Kirk/Spock Art |
cannedebonbon [Kirk/Spock, R (A few pics are NSFW) - PICTURE HEAVY]
Fandoms: Star Trek, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, X-Men:First Class, Harry Potter, Supernatural, Catherine, etc
Review Note: Some really nice work here with a good, clean style.
.: Stargate Atlantis :.
Comp Time |
sabinelagrande [John/Rodney, PG-13, 1.602 words]
Summary: One Monday morning, Rodney McKay stopped going to work.
Review Note: Crack fic that's just a lot of fun to read. Rodney actually uses comp time and it all starts to go to hell.
.: Stargate SG-1 :.
Pursuit |
gategremlyn [Gen, G, 1.159 words]
Summary: This was such fun to write! The challenge, in honor of Daniel's birthday, was to write a story about Daniel without using his name.
Review Note: It works! There is, of course, the bad cliche wherein an author refers to their characters too frequently (or at all, in many cases) with descriptors that don't fit the POV or don't fit the character at all: the blond, the archaeologist, and so on. Gategremlyn manages to sidestep that despite never actually using Daniel's name the entire time. Nice!
.: Stargate SG-1/The Mummy :.
The Husband of Sha'uri |
stargate_xing [Gen-ish, PG-13, 2.200 words]
Summary: Evie could not be certain, but it sounded a great deal like the Ancient Egyptian equivalent of "Oh, no, not again," which struck her as a rather bizarre thing for a newly awakened mummy to say.
Review Note: Poor Daniel! This is both funny and a tad bittersweet, but the end had an overall satisfying vibe to it.
.: The Vampire Diaries :.
Don't Threaten me with Love Baby |
deastar [Damon/Stefan/Elena, PG-13, 2.887 words]
Summary: “Don’t enjoy this too much,” I told Damon’s unconscious body as I slid down the bed to lie by his side, curving my body around his, willing it to absorb the heat
Review Note: Interesting with a prickly relationship between Damon and Elena, but not so antagonistic that I didn't enjoy them together. This was the good kind of prickly.
.: X-Men :.
Excellent Judgment |
cimorene [Charles/Erik, NC-17, 10.968 words]
Summary: Raven sighs. "Everybody dates. You used to date!" / "That wasn't dating, Raven, that was drinking," explains Charles.
Review Note: Not quite a PWP, it just kind of seems that way once you've read it (definitely in a good way). Interesting characterizations, plenty of amusing banter, and steamy scenes.
Deep Sea (Eggs, Wolves, and Rubber Ducks) |
pprfaith [Charles/Erik, R, 5.800 words]
Summary: Sequel to
Old Metal. Psychics, werewolves and a whole lot of metaphors make up Charles’s morning after meeting Vampire Sheriff Erik Lehnsherr.
Review Note: This is a review note that should be in its own post and far more in-depth than I'm going to do it justice right now. An amazing fic with complex characterizations and their resulting complex relationships, gorgeous imagery, and fascinating world-building and storyline continuance from the prequel. I highly recommend it and wish I had more brain right now to describe to you the depth you can pull out of this piece.
Where There is Darkness |
unveiled [Charles/Erik, PG, 2.256 words]
Summary: In the autumn of 2012, Daniela Zhou interviews Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. This is her story.
Review Note:A fascinating look at how the future of the XMFC universe might view Charles and Erik, primarily with respect to their powers.
Hold 'em Like They Do in Texas Please |
sutlers [Charles/Erik, R, 1.034 words]
Summary: Moira MacTaggert is an exceptional woman.
Review Note: SHE'S ONE OF US.
The Pen(is) Mightier | Anon [Charles/Erik, NC-17, 10.784 words]
Prompt: Erik can feel what metal feels like it's an extension of him. So every time Charles puts the metal end of a pen in his mouth, or licks his spoon, or puts a fork in his mouth, or worries a ring or necklace pendant in his mouth -- Erik feels it.
Review Note: Honestly, I'm kind of surprised this isn't an XM fandom wide trope. Anon does a great job with it here! :D

Xavier Mansion - House and Grounds |
effex Summary: Last Thursday I was working on my X-men fic and, at one point, I thought 'Raven's at the lake...where's that in relation to the house, again? I need a map.'
Review Note: An excellent resource, complete with pdf file for download.
Art
Erik Lensherr Portrait | Posted via
abbichicken [Gen, PG]
Summary: Erik Lehnsherr portrait, by the Mymble's Daughter.
Review Note: Gorgeous oil portrait of Erik.
More XM/Calvin & Hobbes Fusion Art |
ratcreature [Gen, PG]
Summary: A while ago I did
a drawing for the adorable X-Men/Calvin & Hobbes fusion,
The Best Things in Life are Blue by
oddegg which has Raven as Calvin and Hank as Hobbes. And because this is such a happy-making story, I decided to distract myself with it and drew two more pictures for one of the scenes
Review Note: More adorableness!! I love Erik stabbing under the bed with a poker.
.: X-Men/Doctor Who :.
What's Up with the Sonic? |
di_br [Gen, PG]
Author's Note: trunks_angel is one of the reasons why this LJ is now so full of XMFC stuff. She keeps feeding my obsession and whenever we talk, it doesn't matter what the subject is, we always somehow end up discussing XMFC. And Doctor Who. Frequently at the same time. So this was pretty much inevitable.
Review Note: Silly and fun with a very cute style.
.: Vividcon Vid Recs :.
Sanctuary
Blow |
kuwdora [Gen, PG]
Summary: This place is about to blow.
Review Note: This falls under the category of 'fun vid' for me - I'm sure a regular Sanctuary watcher could pull a deeper analysis out of it. I just plain enjoy watching it.
How to Train Your Dragon
Roll with the Changes |
fan_eunice [Gen-ish, PG]
Summary: I'll be here when you are ready.
Review Note: So adorable!!
Stargate SG-1/Atlantis/Universe
High Voltage |
kuwdora [Gen, PG]
Summary: High voltage: bringing you up and taking you down.
Review Note: The POV for this is the Ancients, which I didn't know the first time I watched it and left me a bit perplexed. Now that I realize that, it's a fascinating vid!
The Vampire Diaries
Feel it in My Bones |
greensilver [Damon/Stefan/Elena, PG-13]
Summary: You are here to stay.
Review Note: Pretty! Pretty in motion!
Doctor Who
You Told the Drunks I Knew Karate |
settiai [Amy/Rory, PG]
Summary: "I do the dumbest things for you." Oh, Rory. No, scratch that. Oh, Ponds. ♥
Review Note: Hilarious! A perfect song for the subject, where Amy confidently leads the way into complete disaster and Rory comes stumbling after. :P
X-Men
Eric's Song |
butterfly [Charles/Erik, PG]
Summary: No matter what path Erik follows, Charles will continue to search for hope - for them both.
Review Note: Sweet and heartbreaking and wonderful (this is why we need fix-it fic, because their story is too wonderful together for them to be apart).
Young Riders
Gonna Make You Love Me |
dualbunny [Gen-ish, PG]
Summary: Sometimes, when a group of Pony Express riders love each other very much...
Review Note: I loved this show as it was airing and seeing it vidded is a warm and fuzzy nostalgia trip for me. ♥
Sherlock Holmes
Murder on the Dance Floor |
astolat [Gen, PG-13]
Summary: Dancing! Sparkly lights! Murder! Yay!
Review Note: Such a good fit for Sherlock!
