[The PCD is dangling from a thong around Alphonse's elbow. The teenager is dressed in normal jeans and a t-shirt, slogging through the thigh-deep, muddy water that's flooding the riverbank, holding onto the branches of the trees that managed to make it through the storm. Determinedly and almost losing a shoe several times, Alphonse makes it to a ( Read more... )

Eh? Ah, I forgot I hadn't shown you my abilities yet.

[He grins.] I have to live up to Asuna after all.

No, you haven't. But even based off of what little I've seen just now, I can tell that Asuna-san has had a strong partner while she has been here!

I've never seen magic like that before! It's amazing! What is it?

Hah, thanks. You're going to make me blush.

Alchemy! It's the manipulation of matter on an atomic level through force of will. It's a science, but I've discovered it's got roots in magic and I've been studying it since I was little. I took a look at some magical primers from your world a while back and it's got some of the same elements. For instance, did you know that your spell-language, Latin, is the same language used in mundane science and in alchemy?

A lot of alchemists use it in their codes.

Great job Al! It'll be a lot easier cleaning the up without having to worry about the flood water.

[The simple words make him beam, proud as if he'd just managed to save an orphanage. Mom's praise will do that.]

Thanks, Mom. Go ahead and tell me if you need anything else fixed, but I'm sure Ed will get to it.

Just a little trick there.

[The tiny flush in Al's cheeks and the pleased smile make it clear it's a little more than that, though.]

Do you need any help over at the bar? I can fix broken glass, too.

Is that alchemy?

Maybe later, I'm still trying to figure out the extent of the damage.

Yes.

Be careful, the waters are moving fast and if your arm... nevermind.

Thanks, sir.

I do, in a way. All is one, one is all. I just... slide my soul into the world and all its little bits and peices, and tell it what to do, and it does it. It's hard to explain.

I don't know anything about "mana" but I'm not a mage. I'm an alchemist.

Part of it, yes.

[Al half-smiles and pushes away a bit of debris with his foot, waiting for the water level to go down a bit more before he tries to move.]

It's much more effective on stone, during a fight.

Stone would be a more solid substance to work with, right?

Exactly. The water's washing all this dirt and mud away, I'm going to have to sit here for a while and keep redoing the trenches while they keep filling themselves in with silt.

Stone and wood are nice, but I like metals best. I've got more of an affinity for them, and the molecules are cleaner, easier to manipulate.
