This is a little difficult to admit in the profession that has made a point of distilling, packaging and marketing hero worship. I am at the right place, wearing the right uniform, and I even know some of the lingo. Can't I be just a bit of a hero? Unfortunately, I'm really not such a badass. Now, I never particularly thought that I was, so this is ( Read more... )

You've spent more time on the mean streets of education than I have! You likely have a lot of great observations... ;o)

Perhaps it's just honest to admit that I really sometimes don't have a clue?

And that is the mark of a true practitioner in the medical field.

You will do well, grasshoppah. ;)

As the old saw goes, "That's why they call it 'practicing' medicine."

One of my friends who also started out in transport told me how he used to be a horrible medic. And getting into things, I can kinda see where that comes from. I feel kinda bummed after some calls when I realize after the fact that I could have done things better. Or driving home at the end of shift and realize I forgot some little detail in my report that while not really important to the patient's outcome, could be important for CYA.

But, I do get my patients transferred to correct facility successfully and without them getting worse, which is the bare minimum of expectations. :/

I like that line about, "If you're not scared, you're not paying attention."

That is so common: the end of shift thought where it occurs to me (or anybody, really) that I should have put more on my report or some such. I'm sure that you do more than the *bare minimum* at work.
