all good people read good books

This year I have gotten my ebook collection in better order, both on my computer and in figuring out how to work with OverDrive so I can check out ebooks from the library. Also, ebook popularity seems to have caught on appropriately, so new releases are usually also available in the digital public library as much as in physical copies, and much ( Read more... )

The Martian radhardened January 5 2016, 02:55:16 UTC
Having read (by which I mean listened to the audio version of) The Martian and seen the movie, I think it's one of those rare cases where I prefer the movie to the book, since the movie leaves out two of the things I disliked most about the book, namely the rape joke and the higher-status staff (figuratively) shitting on Mindy.

The rape misusage was unfortunate and I'm glad that's not in the movie. Watney was sort of halfway to an ass in general. But from what I've seen of the trailers, it seems like damon did a pretty good job depicting that. I remember Mindy was treated poorly at first but not what happened later. I'm also glad that's not in the movie.

1. Ready Player One I thought was absolutely awesome. It wasn't the nostalgia at all for me. Given my shit-poor memory, I am relatively immune to that sort of cultural referential stuff. Although, I felt like it rang fairly true so it didn't detract for me.

But what captivated me was the world - the world where people are numbing themselves with technology and living outside reality. It is a futuristic dystopia for sure, but, close enough to our current circumstances to be thought provoking.

2. The Martian I read in two nights fast, which is something I can only do when i am misbehaving and staying up far too late. The fact that I did it says something about how captivated I was by the book. I liked the scientific exposition (although I suspect that it was slightly too much for actual literary merit). I haven't seen the movie.

I don't havea ny overlap with you otherwise.
I suspect you might enjoy the Cinder series.

If you liked the virtual stuff in RPO, I'd recommend my friend metahacker's book We Were Gods (and the sequel End Game). A bit more grizzly, but great world-building. Available at SmashWords: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/396337

I'm guessing you mean this Cinder? http://www.amazon.com/Cinder-Book-One-Lunar-Chronicles/dp/1250007208

I shall check it out! (literally) :)
