she drinks a whiskey drink, she drinks a vodka drink

Last week was Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week and Thursday, my local bar Hough's had a barrel-aged beer night, where they had 32 barrel-aged beers on draft. I joined a group of 7 other people who also like that sort of thing. We squeezed our way into the crowd (and amazingly, eventually found two tables), ordered everything in their 4oz taster sizes, ( Read more... )

I've found that drinking a lot of water during and after drinking a lot of alcohol really helps minimize hangovers. A hangover is basically dehydration and electrolyte imbalance; I've been told that Pedialyte is actually an excellent cure, but haven't tried that.

I have a lot of the same reactions you do to being drunk (which I don't get very often), though while it does lower some inhibitions, it raises others, as being somewhat of a control freak I find myself more actively managing my actions so as to compensate for its effects. I think that's the reason why it stops being fun if I get beyond moderately tipsy, as I start to run out of capacity to manage it. (More than once, people have told me they couldn't tell I was drunk when I was just below the no-longer-fun point.)

I'm usually well-hydrated by default, which has probably helped me to avoid hangovers in the past. I've heard from a few sources that the barrel influence (particularly from the bourbons) bumps up the after-effects, which might be so, since I don't think I drank more alcohol by volume than I have at other times.

The only thing I particularly compensate for is my speech. I normally have difficulty enunciating, so when I detect that I'm starting to slur, I tend to speak more carefully, ending up more clear than when sober. I have the most fun with my balance, as it tends to go just enough for me to have fun with it, but not enough to actually be a problem. Which means people notice me being wobbly and laughing about it, and I assure them I'm doing just fine.
