I.... want......a.... sheeeeeeeeeeep! A Dorpa! That is the coolest looking sheep EVER! (is used to marinos, and nothing but marinos, oh apart from one black-faced thing which was a cranky old sod) Well, I'd probably have to get a couple otherwise it would be very lonely. I used to bottle feed the orphan lambs at the community farm when I kept my horses there and god DAMN they are the CUTEST little things in creation. I still have trouble eating lamb :P I love watching sheep dogs work too, that's just absolute magic. You're dad looks like a right character ( ... )

meh. stockhorses (not that he is one, shhh) should be bloody well trained not to pull back & to be reasonably bloody bombproof. i've been flamed on Eq for a variety of things incl... leaving the leadrope trailing on the ground. OMG *dies* horses can tread on the rope you know, and break their necks!!! omg ( ... )

Gawd, I get flamed whenever I mention I leave my horses out in winter. I think they just do it very differently over in the States, altho I have seen plenty of American horses do ground-tying so I don't see what the problem is, not to mention Mustangs living out FAR harsher winters than we get here. Hehehehe, he looks like a perfect little stockhorse :-)
Dorpa's shed... that is awesome! I have never heard of a sheep shedding. That's def a new one on me. Can just imagine someone walking around the paddock with a lint-remover muttering under their breath about bloody shedding sheep messing up the place. ;-D

those are really cool pictures. I'd love to chase sheep around all day. Can you explain what crutching is?

well, shearing is to remove ALL the fleece so sheep are nakies over summer (and to harvest the wool).

crutching is the equivalent of shearing the pants off. think of urself with stickybum breeches on - you know how the leather/suede comes around up ur thighs and over ur backside? that part of the sheep's wool is removed in late autumn so that when they poo they don't develop "dags" which are balls of shit basically, stuck to the wool. and also for lambing so the wool is out of the way and it's not messy.

ahhh so cute! your white ones look just like our white ones, except yours are wooly and ours are haired. (i think haired and shedding mean the same thing, right?) ours are st croix, btw, also a meat breed. they're very fine boned so all their energy goes right to muscle/fat. they're all pretty much obese, haha. i think your dad and sam are long lost soul twins! sam grew up on a huge 90k acre sheep farm in tamworth. now he just has a small flock for the same reasons your dad does. i love the black skinned one! i want one of those!
