Disclaimer: Alas the Torchwood character's are not mine, they belong to other more fabulous people. Which makes me sad. The OC's are all my creations though, not that i wouldn't share them with RTD. 'Cause i so would ^_^
Un-beta'ed, sorry. Any and all mistakes are my own (i'm known as the typo queen around friends), and i apologize for them.
Author's Note: Again a long time between updates, i'm sorry about that. But i've just got a new laptop and it's taking some getting use too lol. Plus i've had continuing health issues that have taken over most of my time. Now, on to story things. For the longest time this fic was 11 chapters, well it's not anymore. The plot bunnies hit me again and i'm adding to it, as of right now it's up to 13 chapters and may be growing. Only time will tell ^_^
Summary: Jack takes desperate measures to assure his remaining staff is safe, which leaves him with a new team who are experiencing a VERY different side of Jack. Now it's up to one of his closest friends to try and straighten things out.
Jack, who had been watching Martha and Emma on the CCTV saw when the UNIT doctor jumped up jubilantly and ran out of the tourist office. When Emma entered the Hub, he poked his head out of his office door. “Emma!” He called.
“Sir?” She said, walking up to his office.
“Where did Martha run off too?” He asked, not even bothering to hide the fact that he had once again been spying on her.
“She went to the coffee shop.” She told him simply, still holding the drinks she had yet to get a chance to distribute.
“Why? Didn’t you get her one?”
“Yes, I did sir. She was going there to meet someone I think, or at least, that’s what I gathered.”
“Oh.” Jack paused.
“Sir? The coffee’s are getting cold.” Emma informed him politely, signaling that she really needed to get back to work.
“Right, yeah. Go ahead.” He waved her off, moving to re-enter his office. “Wait, Emma!” He called after the young woman who was now about a foot away.
“Yes Captain?”
“Was she meeting a woman names Gwen Williams?” Jack asked.
“No sir.” Emma said, starting to walk again. “A man named Ianto Jones.” She told him over her shoulder.
At the mention of Ianto, Nareesh’s head snapped up. ”Emma.” She hissed through her teeth at the approaching blonde.
“What?” Emma asked softly.
“Shut up!” The other woman said sharply, but it was too late. Jack was already sweeping past both of them quickly, his large coat billowing out behind him as he ran out through the cog door.
Nareesh groaned, rolling her eyes.
“What? What did I do?” Emma asked innocently, suddenly completely and utterly lost as to what had just happened.

Martha ran all the way to the small shop, stopping outside it for only a minute to catch her breath.
Once she had calmed her breathing, she entered the shop and looked around the interior. The fact that she was looking for someone was pretty obviously painted on her face, as her wide searching eyes scanned over each face in the establishment. Not seeing Ianto anywhere, she went over to the counter and leaned her arms on it.
“What can I get for you love?” The tall blonde man from behind the counter asked.
“Actually, some information. I was told that Ianto Jones works here, is he in?” She asked hopefully.
The server clicked his tongue and shook his head. “Sorry doll, he’s out on lunch. If you want to leave your name and contact information, I can see that he gets it.”
“Umm, no. No, that’s okay. I’ll come back, thanks.” She smiled, giving a little wave before turning away and leaving the shop.
Once outside she was surprised when she was grabbed firmly, two large hands gripping her upper arms.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Jack said harshly, resisting the urge to give the woman a hard shake.
“Jack! Let go of me!” Martha demanded, shifting her arms in his rough grasp.
“No, answer me dammit!” He said.
“I’m just trying to help.” She told him firmly.
“You’re driving me nuts!” This time Jack did give her a little shake to punctuate his point.
There was suddenly another voice behind the two. “Oi! Easy mate.” Jack felt his shoulder grabbed, pulling him away from Martha. “Let’s not get rough alright?”
Jack felt the hand on his shoulder turn him so that he was facing the man who thought he was coming to Martha’s apparent rescue. That man being none other than Ianto Jones.
The moment both men locked eyes on one another, they paused, staring at one another. Jack, too scared to even breathe. And Ianto, feeling an odd sense of familiarity sweeping over him.
“Do I know you?” Ianto finally asked, his brow furrowing in confusion.
Martha, who was standing just a bit behind Jack, reached out and placed a hand on his arm. “Jack.” She whispered, edging him on.
Before the other man had a chance to say anything, he felt Ianto’s grip tighten on his shoulder, his had fisting the fabric of his coat. Jack had seen people come out of retcon amnesia before, and the moment he saw the shocked look sweep across the other man’s face, he knew it was over.
Now Jack had done a impeccable job with Ianto’s retconning, there should have been very little that could have triggered him. But right then, as Ianto stared into Jack’s sad blue eyes and felt the familiar material of Jack’s greatcoat under his fingers. It had only take one thing, one little thing to trigger him. The whispered name that had caused ripples of happiness and anger sweep over him at the same time, Jack.
Ianto made a small pained noise in the back of his throat as several years of lost memories went crashing back into his mind like waves against rocks. He closed his eyes, turning his head away as the memories of pain and battles and aliens and death all ravaged him mind. Familiar mental images of loved ones that he had lost, Lisa, Tosh, Owen. And then the images of Jack, oh so very many of Jack. When he finally opened his eyes again, his breath was coming in short gasps. He slowly looked at Jack, his hand still on the older man’s shoulder gripping his coat.
“Ianto?” Jack’s voice was soft and tentative, and most of all regretful.
The moment his name was spoke, Ianto’s face hardened. His anger getting the better of him as he hauled back and punched Jack heavily across the jaw.
“Ianto!” Martha admonished loudly as Jack was knocked to the ground by the force of the blow.
Ianto didn’t acknowledge the woman, instead just glared down at Jack silently before turning and walking away.
Jack wasn’t really all that surprised by the punch, heck, he had been hit before and for much much less. What he hadn’t be able to steel himself against, was the look of pain in Ianto’s eyes as he stood over him silently fuming.
“Jack, are you alright?” Martha asked, kneeling down next to him, trying to check on his bleeding lip.
He just pulled away, standing up. It was now his turn to tower over someone angrily. “Leave.” He told her simply, looking at her where she was sitting crouched on the ground.
“Jack, I just wanted to help.” She insisted, looking up at him.
“I want you gone Martha, now.” He said firmly before turning and walking away.
“This isn’t my fault Jack!” She called out after him form where she was on the ground. “None of this would have happened if you hadn’t betrayed them!” She shouted, smacking her hand against the sidewalk for emphasis. With a sigh, she bowed her head sadly. So maybe it was partially her fault, but what Jack had done was wrong. She had been determined to prove that to him and still was, even if that meant she lost his friendship in the process.

When Jack arrived back at the Hub, his mood was dark to say the very least. As he entered he saw the team gathering up their things. Nareesh was standing by her workstation transferring files from her computer onto a handheld device, whilst James was standing in the doorway of the armory grabbing extra clips for his gun.
Mackenzie was in the med bay filling up her medical kit, and Collin was sitting on the sofa speaking closely with Emma. Their heads were tilted together, one of Emma’s hands rested softly on one of his knees.
“What’s going on?” Jack snapped more roughly than strictly needed.
Everyone quickly turned their attention to Jack, who was standing just inside the door, looking mightily pissed off. No one noticed his bloody lip thanks to the fact that the glare he was giving them right then had apparently caused everyone to go momentarily mute.
“Speak!” He barked, causing everyone but James to jump. Jack watched out of the corner of his eye, Emma and Collin quickly pull away from each other with a blush.
“Rift alarm.” James told him.
“I see, you decided the best way to appease this unknown threat is to stand around?” Jack was being unfair, he knew this. But at that very moment Jack was so upset he really didn’t care.
“We were about to contact you?” James replied calmly, ignoring Jack’s sarcasm.
“Well you’ve contacted me, now get out.”
The team all looked at one another for moment. “Sir?” Nareesh questioned. “Aren’t you coming with us?”
“No.” Jack said as he started to walked through the Hub and toward his office. “You’re fully trained adults, deal with it yourselves.”
“But....” Nareesh started, but was cut off my Jack’s booming voice.
“Move!” He ordered, slamming his office door shut.
The five people all stood where they were, stunned. James was the first to speak up. “Well you heard him, lets get a move on.” His sentence was punctuated by a loud clicking noise as he slid a new clip into his gun.
“But you’ve never been on a mission without Jack.” Emma said, sounding worried. “He’s always in charge.”
“Yeah, well he’s not today.” James said. “So you heard the man, let’s move.”
Nareesh nodded, gathering up her tech. “He’s right, come one, we should get there.”
“Bloody brilliant.” Mackenzie muttered, picking up her things and making her way out of the medical bay’s entrance. “We’re gonna get our asses killed.”
“That’s a best case scenario.” Nareesh said.
“And what’s the worst case scenario?” James asked.
“We fuck up and the planet gets enslaved.”
“Then I say we hope for death.” Mackenzie quipped, causing James and Nareesh to chuckle.
The three where almost out the large cog door when they realized Collin wasn’t with them.
“Oi! Boy wonder.” James hollered. “Get a move on would ya.”
“Yeah, sorry.” Collin called out, looking around on his desk for something.
“Looking for this?” Emma said, holding up a GPS device.
Collin smiled widely. “Yes! Thank you.” He took the device from her, moving to leave before stopping and turning back to her. “Stay away from Jack eh?” He told her, quickly placing a kiss on her cheek before running to catch up with the rest of the team.
“I will.” Emma said before he left. “Good luck!” She called out to them. “Be safe....” She said as the door rolled close, leaving her alone in the large Hub. “Please.” She added softly.
