Don't know much about painting, but I can relate to the fear of 'ruining' something you're in the process of creating. Writers often have to face up the truth: admit that something has to give, go, be erased! At the very least, be changed, edited, rewritten.
And there's the temptation to keep on trying to improve a piece. There's a school of thought that suggests there is no such thing as a finished book/poem etc. One can tinker for ever. I guess the same must happen with a painting.
Letting our work just be, stand as it is & be our 'best endeavour' - that's the real challenge perhaps.
