Learn as you go

I worked on a painting-in-progress today, attempting the glazing method (where you layer transparent color over a neutral underpainting).  For much of the time, I was thinking, YIKES, what am I doing???

It can be hard to press on with a project, when you're afraid of "ruining" what you've done so far.  And, not only is this method new to me, but I was having trouble with the painting medium I was using.  I ended up thinning my paint with plain water (I need to use water-miscible oils because people around here are allergic to terps).

After a few hours of hit-and-miss, feeling fatigued, I cleaned up.  Later I went back and looked at what I'd done.  Well, okay!  I can see where it's going.

Stuck my palette in the freezer, ready for another session.  I'll make something of this, yet.
