Fic: Supernatural: Dean/Future Cas: "The Long Road Back" (4/28)

Jun 24, 2011 14:46

I know this fic can be a bit angsty so I wanted to put some fluffy/humor in as well. Hopefully, some aspects of this chapter make you smile some.

Title: The Long Road Back
Author: Nicole
Rating: R (maybe NC-17 later to be safe)
Chapters: 4/? (26 so far but i'm still writing)
Warnings: language, violence, drug use, eventual slash
Spoilers: only up to 5 X 4 (but you'll see me draw from information we found out later)
Characters/Pairings: focus on Dean/Future Cas but also Risa, Chuck, OC's, LuciferSam, and future Dean.
Disclaimer: Supernatural is not mine and I don't own anything but the errors.
Summary: AU 5 X 04 The End fic. In many ways this will be a fix it story. Dean stops his future self from sending Cas and the others into a trap and Zachariah seems to be missing in action. Dean has to figure out where to go from here.
A/N: This fic has been consuming my brain in a good way. It's already over 34,000 words and I'm not done. I really wanted to play around in this world, i love apocalyptic type settings, and i thought it would be a good way to keep myself busy during the hiatus. This story is going to have action, violence, and some death but the focus of this fic will be a slowly evolving love story in the middle of a world gone to hell between a certain hunter and a certain fallen angel. If you have a problem with that, don't read it.
Word count: 1475

“You can sleep here,” Cas motioned towards a small bed in the far right hand corner. “I’ll hang a blanket later, it’ll give you some privacy. I sleep in there.” Cas pointed towards a door a few feet away.

“Cool,” Dean said while he really took in the place. Candles, new age junk, and a poster that read: Are you a survivor, then pick up your gun and fight. “Classy picture.”

Cas smiled tiredly.

“You look beat. The tour can wait until tomorrow.”

Castiel shook his head. “I’ll live. I’m too wired to sleep.”

“I know that feeling.”

“I’m sure you do.”

By the end of the day, Dean had so many names and faces in his head, he knew he’d be lucky to remember a handful of them. At least he knew his way around, and everyone seemed to be getting used to the idea of him.

It was starting to get dark when they headed back to Cas’s place.

“Having fun yet?” Cas teased.

“Oh yeah, that was a blast.”

His friend laughed, maybe it was just wishful thinking, but it didn’t sound quite so broken this time.

As soon as they were inside, Cas kicked his shoes off and started lighting candles. “You hungry?” he asked after the last candle had been lit.

“Yeah.”

Cas nodded and opened a cabinet. He pulled out a few things and then walked over to the rug where Dean had first seen him sitting. Cas set down a jug of water, a few energy bars, a bit of bread, and some half eaten canned goods with some type of mesh covering them. He sat cross legged, smiled, and said, “Dinner is served.”

Why not. Dean took off his jacket and shoes, then sat down across from Cas.

“I know it’s not much, but it’s what we’ve got.”

“Looks good to me,” Dean smiled. He really was starving.

They both ate in companionable silence for awhile, until something occurred to Dean. “When I first arrived here, after I escaped from…me.”

Cas chuckled.

“Chuck stopped me. He said something about a food shortage.”

Cas stopped eating and sighed. “Chuck’s right. I didn’t want to bring it up tonight. Yes, food, with the exception of canned goods, is running very low.”

Dean suddenly felt like shit for taking these people’s food.

Somehow Cas knew. “This is mine. I’m choosing to share it with you. If it makes you feel better, consider it my way of saying thanks for saving my life today.”

“You’re a good friend Cas.”

He smiled weakly. “You don’t have to keep saying things like that Dean. I don’t blame you for what he did.”

“I didn’t say it out of guilt Cas. Stop thinking that. I said it because it’s true. And by the way - I did do it. That’s me in a few years in case you forgot.”

“Okay, let’s make a deal. I’ll agree to stop attributing everything nice you say to guilt, and you stop thinking that everything he did - you did.”

“Wait, what?”

Cas shook his head. “Never mind. Just eat. The bread’s not going to last much longer anyway,” Cas ripped off a piece and tossed it at him. Dean’s reflexes were apparently taking a nap, the bread hit him on the forehead, then landed on his lap.

They both looked at each other, then burst into a fit of laughter. It really wasn’t that funny, but they both needed it.

“God, we are morons,” Dean gasped in between laughing.

It reminded him of not long ago, for him anyway, when they’d left that brothel together. For some reason, laughing came easily when he was with Cas. Apparently some things hadn’t changed. Cas wasn’t exactly the same, but he was still Cas. The more Dean got to know him, the more he knew that this was still his feathery friend minus the wings, and with a lot more baggage. But his friend nonetheless.

“I have missed you Dean. This you I mean.”

Dean picked up the bread and popped it into his mouth. “I am a joy to be around.”

“I don’t know if I’d go that far,” Cas smirked as he took a drink from the jug.

“Ouch,” Dean placed his hand over his heart. “You wound me.”

“I think you can take it.”

Dean snatched another piece of bread, rolled it in his fingers, and tossed it right at Castiel’s nose.

His aim was dead on.

This resulted in another insane explosion of laughter.

They were both giggling like idiots when Chuck walked in, the look on his face was priceless.

“Sorry. Did I interrupt something?”

“Yes,” they both blurted.

Chuck started to leave.

“Dude, we’re kidding,” Dean said.

Cas stood up. “Did you need something?”

“I actually wanted to talk about what we’re going to do about replenishing our supplies, but it can wait until morning,” Chuck said waving his clipboard.

Cas turned back to Dean, who was brushing crumbs off his lap. Dean gave him a look that said. Whatever works for you.

“Tomorrow will be fine. I was actually getting ready to discuss this with Dean. I’ll fill him in, go ahead and let everyone know we’re going to need to make another supply run. See if we get any volunteers.”

Chuck looked skeptical. He nodded, then left.

Cas sat back down, his eyes still dancing with a bit of humor. “I suppose it’s time to get serious again.”

“Yeah. I suppose it is,” Dean smiled warmly.

“Let’s finish up, then we’ll talk.”

******

Dean helped Cas clean up their mess. Cas showed him where to put the leftovers, and then they both sat down again.

Cas’s face was very serious. “A few times a year we have to do a supply run. Things run low, and people start getting worried. We have a decent stock of canned goods as I mentioned, but it’s not enough to last more than another month. Not to mention medical supplies, ammo, cloth-”

“Toilet paper,” Dean grinned.

Cas groaned. “You have been spending too much time with Chuck.”

“What can I say, the man needs his TP.”

“Chuck is in charge of keeping track of supplies. I’m sure it’s first on the list.”

“I put Chuck in charge of…something,” Dean stammered.

“Let’s just say, future you didn’t have much choice. We didn’t get many volunteers. So yeah, he’s in charge of inventory. I was skeptical at first, but he’s actually done a rather good job.”

“Alrighty then. What else do I need to know?”

“In order to get these things, we have to head into a city.”

Dean shrugged, feeling like he was missing something.

“Cities are very heavily populated Dean.”

Dean thought back to his encounter upon arriving in the future. One that he’d barely survived. “Shit. Are there no small, backwater towns we can raid?”

Cas shook his head. “No. They’ve already been raided by us, and everyone else trying to avoid densely populated areas. The odds of finding a small town that hasn‘t already been scavenged is very unlikely.”

“Nothing’s ever easy for us is it?” Dean ran his hands down his face and groaned.

“No. It’s not.”

Dean heard movement, then he felt Cas’s knee bump up against his leg. He felt a warm hand come to rest on his shoulder.

Dean looked up.

Cas’s face was surprisingly close. Personal space was something Cas had always struggled with.

“You don’t have to come with us.”

Dean sat up straight. “Of course I’m coming along. You should know that.”

Cas sighed, and let his hand fall away. “I had to give you the choice. This isn’t your-”

“Cas, as long as I’m here I’m helping. I’ll do whatever I can.”

“I thought you’d say that. For what it’s worth, I’m glad you’ll be there,” Cas stood up. “We’ll get a team together tomorrow, and decide when and where we’re going. For now, we both should try and get some sleep. It’s going to be another long day tomorrow.”

Dean watched as his friend walked over and blew out most of the candles. He kept two lit.

“Here,” he said, his voice sounded drained. Dean rose and took the offered candle. “I’ll be in there if you need me.”

Dean listened to the sound of Cas’s soft footsteps as they retreated to the bedroom - the door closed. Dean stared after him a few moments, feeling like there was something else he was missing.

Whatever it was, he was too tired to worry about it tonight.

“Goodnight, Cas,” he called.

He was halfway to the bed, when he heard, “Goodnight Dean.”

He smiled, set the candle down. Stripped down to his boxers, shoved the colt under his pillow, and crashed. He was asleep seconds after putting the candle out. It really had been a long day.
