Disclaimer: Supernatural is not mine and I don't own anything but the errors.
Summary: AU 5 X 04 The End fic. In many ways this will be a fix it story. Dean stops his future self from sending Cas and the others into a trap and Zachariah seems to be missing in action. Dean has to figure out where to go from here.
A/N: This fic has been consuming my brain in a good way. It's already over 28,000 words and I'm not done. I really wanted to play around in this world, i love apocalyptic type settings, and i thought it would be a good way to keep myself busy during the hiatus. This story is going to have action, violence, and some death but the focus of this fic will be a slowly evolving love story in the middle of a world gone to hell between a certain hunter and a certain fallen angel. If you have a problem with that, don't read it.
Word count: 997

Chapter One

Cas had known something was wrong. He’d seen it on both Dean’s faces. He knew Dean better than most. He’d suspected he was lying to them, or at the very least hiding something. He’d never imagined things had gotten this bad. He’d been willing to kill them. He supposed that really shouldn’t surprise, or hurt him. But it had. Apparently, he'd meant even less to their fearless leader than he’d realized.

Castiel knew he was a mess. He just hadn’t believed that he was expendable. He’d always been there for Dean, no matter what. When Dean had started to harden, and grow cold, calculating, and distant, he’d still stayed. When his words had become cruel and cutting, he’d stayed. When he’d started killing people at the drop of a hat, just because they might be infected, he’d stayed.

The women and drugs were his defense. He lost himself in them. It made the loneliness and the pain bearable. At least that’s what he told himself every day. It was a lie. He was still alone, still tired, still broken, still useless. The pills just made it easier to forget every now and then. The world had ended. He’d lost his grace. Then he’d lost his family. First the Angels had all left. Then Sam had said yes. Then Bobby had died, that one still haunted his nightmares. He couldn’t allow himself to think about that day. Then, little by little, Dean had died as well. Oh, he was still up and walking around. But the Dean that had been his friend, his family, was gone. Now he was just a broken, cruel, shell.

Cas stayed because he had nowhere else to go. And despite it all, he couldn’t leave Dean. He’d kept hoping one day things would get better.

Then today had happened.

The much more likeable Dean interrupted his thoughts. “Cas,” he whispered.

“Yeah,” it amazed him how neutral he managed to keep his voice.

Dean replied. “I’m glad you’re still here. Angel or human, I don’t care. It‘s nice to have someone I trust around.”

Cas felt something he hadn’t in a long time.

Wanted.

It made him ache to tell Dean how much that meant to him, how much he‘d needed to hear it. He knew they weren’t alone in the car. He wouldn’t expose his weakness like that in front of him. He’d just use it against him later. So he took two calming breath’s, and allowed himself a soft, “Thank you.”

Dean fell asleep not long after. Cas looked over at him, and had to force himself not to reach over and touch his arm. Just to make sure he was real. He’d kept waiting for him to disappear. The thought made him feel a bit panicky. He didn’t want him to leave, but knew, it was inevitable. Zachariah would come for him, whenever he was done with whatever game he was playing.

He went to reach for his valium, then remembered Dean had it. He was disgusted with himself, but it didn’t mean he stopped wanting them. Still, he wasn’t going to wake him up. They were only a few hours away from the camp. He’d wait.

He could hear the other Dean struggling again. He glanced in the mirror, so far so good. The ropes were holding. The man knew how to tie a guy up.

**********

Dean woke up when they stopped moving. He opened his eyes and found Cas studying him.

“We there?” He asked while stretching his arms up over his head.

“Home sweet home,” Cas smirked.

“Wonderful,” Dean looked into the backseat. “He behave himself?”

“He was the perfect gentleman. I find him to be much more likeable when he can’t speak.”

There was a muted growl.

Dean chuckled. “Touché.”

“What do you want to do with him?” Cas asked.

This was the question that had been haunting him since they’d started on their way back here. “What do you think?”

He would never forget the look of shock on Castiel’s face. It was obvious, he hadn’t asked him for his opinion on anything in a long time. “Why don’t we ask the others? They were both there, they have a say in this as well.”

Dean nodded. Sounded right to him.

Cas turned the car off, and then he waved Risa, and the other guy, who’s name escaped Dean, over to them.

“Mark, Risa, we need to talk about what to do with him,” he gestured towards the back.

Mark spoke first. “We can’t let him go, not after what he did, I don’t trust him not to feed me to some Croat.”

“I agree,” Risa seconded.

Cas turned toward him and raised an eyebrow.

“Do you guys have somewhere we can lock him up?” Dean asked.

“Yes. There’s a small building near the back of the camp - there are no windows. We’ve used it to restrain trouble makers before,” Cas supplied.

“Why don’t we just kill him?” Mark asked. “That’s what he’d do in our situation.”

Dean sighed. “Because that would make us no better than him.”

They all nodded, but Dean could see Mark wasn’t happy about this.

“We’ll need to put guards on him at all times. I know me, if there’s a way to escape, I’ll find it.”

“Naturally,” Cas rubbed his temples.

Other survivors had started to get curious and were standing outside, or in their doorways watching them. “We’re gonna need to tell them something,” Dean said.

“After we get him locked up, I’ll assign two people I trust to watch him, then we’ll have a town meeting,” he smirked.

“Sounds like a plan to me," Dean said gratefully. “After all this is over, you mind filling me in on things?”

“Not at all, I’ll even give you the guided tour,” his friend grinned.

This time Dean did reach out, he let his hand rest on Cas’s shoulder a moment. “Let’s get this over with.”
