Gym-fan nerdiness...

The US named their mens' gymnastics team today for the Olympics. My feelings are...mixed. Pleased -though not surprised- for the Hamm twins, but gutted for Raj Bhavsar and Sasha Artemev.

Ahh, YOU are the right person to ask. How, exactly, is the new scoring system gonna work? I mean, out of seventeen...?

Heh, well I don't know if I'm the best person to ask, but...

Basically there are two scores which combine to make up each total score (much like in figure skating). One score= the grade of difficulty. Different skills have different values (also like in FS). So the difficulty score consists of the values of the skills performed in a gymnast's routine. (Example: the value of difficulty in Nastia Liukin's current uneven bars routine is a 7.7)

The second score=execution. This score is counted out of a ten, and deductions are made based on performance. (So, running with my Nastia example, her potential total bars score could be a 17.7 if she performed her routine to absolute perfection. and received a 10 on her execution)

Any score over a 15 is a very good score. High 14's are decent. 16+ is excellent, and 17+ is phenomenal (and usually unlikely)

I hoped that helped a little!
