For science, or because my mommy and I are curious...
Poll Words my fandom taught me So. We were watching Ghost Whisperer (the why of that would take more time than I have) and one of the angsty ghosts was talking about always having his sister's six. Jennifer Love Hewitt had to look this up online, and Mum and I made O_O faces at each other. Because who doesn't know that?
And then we discussed it over tea, and all the men in the house admitted that they didn't know what it meant, and just hadn't dared to say so. Dad got what it was from discussion of take point, and working backwards. But it baffled us somewhat. Then, we both watch Stargate, I watch Battlestar, and she watches NCIS. We may have a skewed version of normal vocabulary. So, as one does, I thought I'd talk to my panel of experts.

In Military:
* Six, the six o'clock position of an airplane, person, or any unit, behind the unit
* Six, in a metaphorical sense; the strategical leader of a squad or division, who does not take part in the action, but 'backs' the troops
In modern military parlance, to take point, walk point, be on point, or be a point man means to assume the first and most exposed position in a combat military formation, that is, the lead soldier/unit advancing through hostile or unsecured territory.
