Oh - and I know we're gonna argue about this for the next...forever, probably (hey, Spike'll have company! ;^P) - GOODBecause, if she didn't come back, then we would get no explanation. We'd get no closure*. I think back to how much I HATED Jack in his first episodes and how I would still hate him if we had left it at that... Granted, Moffat hasn't yet written for him since then, so it's not really an exact comparison. But I like the _idea_ of (most of) the sort of story that is being told with this character, and I really want to be able to understand why The Doctor apparently likes her so much. Y'know, eventually
( ... )
When I saw the S5 preview I lol'd because she was in it for a few seconds, and then I read some episode summaries and saw it was going to be a two-parter - would've told you but I didn't know if you'd think it was a spoiler!
I TOTALLY appreciate that sentiment, and love you for it. :D In most cases, you'd be 100% right. I will say, however, that I hate River so much that I actually DO want to be spoiled about her involvement in the show -- I'll be skipping over those episodes anyway unless some spoiler makes me decide to give them a chance. So anything you find out about her character's involvement, tell away!
Then run, because I'll probably start yelling. (Not AT you, just in general. XD)
The summary for the first part, from Last Broadcast (a very, very helpful site for figuring out names of characters in soaps) is:
Don't blink - the Weeping Angels return! The Doctor is recruited by Father Octavian to track the last of the Angels through the terrifying Maze Of The Dead. Meanwhile, the mysterious River Song re-enters the Doctor's life - but can he trust her?
So if you like Weeping Angels it's probably worth it, but it seems likely to me that they won't be scary anymore since we know how they work going into it.
I DID like the Weeping Angels a lot, but I also liked them best as a one-shot. For pretty much exactly the reason you said: part of the creepiness is not knowing anything about them, and finding out who and what they are through a slow suspenseful build-up. Now, with that mystery gone, I don't see the point of bringing them back.
(Also problematic is the fact that, since the episode's original airing, I hit upon the very very VERY obvious solution to the "don't blink" problem of said Angels, to the point where it's become something of a plot hole to me. So I dunno that I'd be able to get past that in new episodes.)
You will have to tell me what you think of those episodes once they have aired. Keep me posted! :)
