Because I am a dork, I'm reading the novelization. It's hilariously terrible. It also addresses a few of your previous nitpicks, like why Kirk's chute breaks - it can't handle the weight of both him and Sulu, and was already stressed after the space jump. Or something. Weak, perhaps, but still an explanation.

The Enterprise can't just send the Fleet a message because the Narada is still jamming them...somehow. That one's still very weak.

They had to drill a hole into Vulcan because the red matter (the red stuff itself a containment of some sort around a particle of "the most unstable substance in the universe," whatever that means) requires a certain temperature to ignite - such as the surface of a star or the molten core of a planet. (Or, apparently, an everyday explosion a la Spock ramming the Romulans with his egg-beater ship?)

So...at least they tried? A little?

LOL! I was about to buy the novelization too...and Rachel made fun of me...so I didn't. But, I probably still will. :) We dorks have to stick together!

Okay, I can buy that bit about Kirk's chute...and maybe even the red matter thing...maybe...
...but there's no way the Romulan mining ship (really!?!?) is still jamming the Enterprise!

Oh Alan Dean Foster...what WILL we do with you?
