ONE
prep the cap using duplicated layers. for this I have base > multiply > screen > screen > stamped image on soft light, all 100%. I decide the colors are too strong so I desaturate the soft light layer and lower the opacity to 50%
>>>
I want duller whites so I create a color fill layer #cde6ea and set it to multiply 100%
>>>
resize the canvas to 100x100 and find your crop!
TWO
suddenly i decide against the more natural coloring I was originally going to do and go red instead so I create a color fill layer #8e3232 and place it on hard light 100%
>>>
THREE
to create shadows, I add a gradient fill layer black to white, linear at -118.3 degrees and set it to soft light 100%
>>>
FOUR
I want a stronger distinction with the light part so I paint a light blob on the right side
>>>
FIVE
the reds are too strong so add a white saturation layer at 20% opacity
SIX
to sharpen and add contrast I stamp the image on a new layer, desaturate it and use the unsharp mask filter (then edit > fade sharpen to taste) and set it on hard light 50%
>>>
SEVEN
i find it a little too dark so I add a levels layer with these settings:
RGB 15 | 1.76 | 255
didn't want to mess with the colors so the red, green and blue settings are untouched.
EIGHT
but it's lost it's redness so I add a color fill layer #decbcb and set it to linear burn 100%
>>>
NINE
once again, i went overboard with the redness so i stamp the image on a new layer, desaturate it and add the film grain filter (grain: 0, highlight: between 10-20, intensity: 1) and lower the opacity to 25%
>>>
TEN
add a brightness/contrast layer at 10/-10 and we're done!

ONE
prep the cap using duplicated layers. it's pretty dark this one so the layers are base > multiply > screen x4 > stamped result on soft light + desaturate, all 100%
TWO
resize the canvas to 100x100. I want Spike center-cropped so I arrange him so then mask away Buffy and all the other distracting elements so you're left with a dark background.
>>>
THREE
create a color fill layer #985f5f and set it to hard light 100%
>>>
FOUR
to get rid of harsh yellows and reds, create a light blue color fill layer #e3fefd and set it to multiply 100%
>>>
FIVE
it's a little dark so stamp the image on a new layer and apply the film grain filter (grain: 0, highlight: between 10-20, intensity: 1). I probably sharpened it using paint daubs too (brush size: 1, sharpness: 1) and then lowered the opacity to 50%
>>>
SIX
at this point I decide to blend in an image of Buffy. I stamp the image again on a new layer. I use the eyedropper tool to pick a color for the background (#370906) and nudge Spike downwards to make way.
>>>
I choose this cap of Buffy and paint everything around her black
then I drag it to my canvas, and set it on screen 100%. I mask away the bottom that's covering Spike and decide it will look cute if it forms a sort of diagonal
>>>
SEVEN
add this texture by innocent_lexys on screen for grunge.
>>>
EIGHT
it's lost it's color from all the screening so to get some back, create a new color fill layer #c85353 and set it to multiply 100%
>>>
NINE
i want the shadows to be a little purple so i create another color fill layer #5c1b68 and set it to lighten 50%
>>>
TEN
it's too dark again so I stamp the image on a new layer, desaturate it and set it to hard light 33%
>>>
ELEVEN
it didn't work as well as I'd hope so I stamp the image on a new layer again and apply the film grain filter.
TWELVE
time for text! the layer was rasterized so i'm not 100% sure of the settings but it's probably Modern No. 20 with size 6pt and center justified. the text is a line from Richard Siken's poem Snow and Dirty Rain:
"What do you want, sweetheart? and you said Kiss me." [italics mine]
i decide to break it into three lines and play around with line height so that it's evenly distributed throughout the icon. rasterize the text layer, add blur then fade blur 20-50% and voila, icon!
as usual, if you need anything clarified, just ask! :)
