I have to warn you in advance that this is one of those icons where I kept changing my mind on the color so it's gonna be a bit confusing but if you can take my rambling, just keep on reading...

ONE
The image is from an old Vertigo poster and is already gorgeous unedited but what works in high-res doesn't work so much in icon form as you can see from the cropped version below. cue me fiddling with coloring.

TWO
To add shadows, create a new gradient fill layer, black to #cc6767 on linear 132.51 degrees and place it on soft light 100%

>>>

TWO
It darkened her face too much so I create a light blob (shown below on black) and set it to soft light

>>>

THREE
Create a new color fill layer #eefcfc and set it to multiply 100% to add a bluish tone.

>>>

FOUR
Create a new gradient fill layer #ebdcc4 to transparent (shown below on black) and set it to linear burn 100% to make deeper shadows. Rasterize it then use the transform tool to move it around until you're satisfied with the effect.

>>>

FIVE
Create a white saturation layer and set it to 25%

SIX
Stamp the image on a new layer. To add contrast, apply the film grain filter (grain 0, highlight area between 10-20, intensity 1). To add sharpness, apply the paint daubs filter (brush size 1, sharpness 1 then edit > fade to taste). Lower the opacity of the layer to 75%

>>>

SEVEN
It's too red again so I duplicate the blue colorfill layer used earlier and set it to multiply 100%

>>>

EIGHT
Take a texture by pandavirus and set it to screen 100% to add grunge.

>>>

NINE
Since I'm scared of whites being too white I create a color fill layer #d8cfb9 and set it to multiply 66%

>>>

TEN
It lost some detail though so I stamp the image on a new layer, desaturate it and set it to hard light 20%

>>>

ELEVEN
looking back now, I could've actually stopped at the previous step but I just kept on adding stuff like this texture (by an unknown maker) on linear burn 33%

>>>

and this blurred texture by innocent_lexys on screen 100%

>>>

and finally another texture (by an unknown maker) on soft light 12%

>>>

I can't tell you what was going on in my head exactly but I think I found the colors a bit blah so I was trying to find something better but ended up with something a little too red.

TWELVE
Needless to say, I wasn't very happy with all the fiddling so to backtrack, I create a levels layer with these settings:

RGB 39 | 1.20 | 255
Red 0 | 0.81 | 255
Green 0 | 1.13 | 255
Blue 0 | 0.94 | 255

phew, better! you can ask me why i don't just use the levels layer in the first place to find what color i want and make my life easier but that would require my brain to think logically and apparently i like to over-complicate everything.

THIRTEEN
At this point, I think I'm done so I add a brightness/contrast layer +10/-10.

FOURTEEN
But there's those dratted whites again so I create a new color fill layer #f1ebe1 and set it to multiply 100%

>>>

FIFTEEN
Once again to get back some detail and contrast, stamp the image on a new layer, desaturate it and set it to hard light 33% and we're finally finished!

ONE
I prep the cap using duplicated layers. for this one it's base > multiply > screen > screen > stamped image on softlight, all 100%

>>>

TWO
I'm using this tumblr graphic as inspiration so obviously I want a center-cropped icon with enough negative space to edit a deer head in. I find my crop and use the eyedropper tool to find a shade from the wall to use as a background color. I choose #b6a27b, create a new layer and paint over the background and eventually Hannibal Lecter's head. I stamp the finished image on a new layer and make it smaller because antlers are long yo.

>>>
>>>

THREE
Take a stock photo of a deer's head (this one is from a book at archive.org). Obviously you need to find one with a similar angle as the head of the original person on the icon so I choose the middle one. Set it on multiply and adjust to fit. It's not going to be a perfect fit so just edit away the parts that make it awkward (I think I used the smudge tool on this for the excess neck.)

>>>

FOUR
I take another stock photo to add texture to the background (this one's from google image search I think), set it on normal 33% then create a layer mask and mask away the parts covering the subject.

>>>
>>>

FIVE
I add a light blob to the upper right side for lighting.

SIX
And it looks like it's done so I stamp the image on a new layer and sharpen it using paint daubs (brush size 1, sharpness 1 then edit > fade to taste)

SEVEN
But I feel like the icon is still missing something so it's time to add more stuff! Stamp the image on a new layer and nudge it to the right to make way.

EIGHT
Take the infamous Will Graham silhouette cap because hey, every hannibal maker's got to use it at least once, flip it horizontally and set it to screen. Move it over to the left side and smudge away the lines.

>>>
>>>

NINE
To add texture to the silhouette, I take this texture by pandavirus and clip it on to the silhouette. I play with placement a bit and decide I want the text on will's part to be vertical but horizontal for the rest of the icon. Duplicate the texture and adjust. the layers look like this:

Put the bottom texture on difference 100% and the one above on subtract 100%. Smudge the parts that cover the deer. (Shown below on a colored background so you can see the effect better.)

>>>
>>>
>>>

TEN
I want it to be a bit more textured so I take another texture by pandavirus and set it to soft light 75%

>>>

ELEVEN
Because of the previous step, it's lost some color so create a new color fill layer #ded9d2 and set it to multiply 75%

>>>

I still want an even deeper brown so I duplicate the color fill layer and set it to color burn 100%

>>>

TWELVE
Now for text! I want to use the cut paper style so first I type out my text with each line on a different layer. (the font is Mom's Typewriter). I take a paper texture (it's rasterized on my psd so I can't point you to the exact one I used, sorry) and cut out three strips (rectangular marquee tool > layer via cut then use layer masks to make the edges a little less straight) and arrange them under the text. I rasterize everything then move it around to find a placement that works. I settle on a tinier version with a drawn line connecting to the deer's mouth so it looks like it's having a conversation with silhouette! Will.

>>>
>>>

THIRTEEN
Add a brightness/contrast layer +10/-10 and it's done!

if you need clarification on any of the steps, just ask! :)
