“I can’t believe we are going to do this. Do you guys no how much trouble we are going to get into if the manager fids our wondering around out here?”

The sing-song voice of the wind.

“Yah, quit whining, Key! We said we were going to do this, so we got to do it.”

The subtle rush of gentle waves.

“Taemin, this is not how I raised you. And you! Onew! How can you go along with this?”

The crunching of sand.

“Remember the last time we refused a dare by the girls? I don’t know about you, but I didn’t enjoy waking up to glitter eyeshadow on my face and multiple colors on my toenails.”

The ruffling of blankets against the night air.

“Haha! LSM-sunbaenim just blinked at us and kept walking. I wonder if anything surprises him anymore.”

The dull thud of water, hitting the shore.

“Yeah, Jjong? Well, imagine his surprise if we’re caught!”

“We’re here.”

Darkness.

All these things awaited the five young boys of SHINee and would be their sole company throughout the whole night.

“Minho, you sure this is the spot? Did you count the steps correctly?”

Minho nodded. “Alright, let’s setup the tent,” Onew ordered and everyone went straight to work.

*****
Key couldn’t believe it. Why in the world were they doing this dare? First of all, the whole situation was begging for trouble. The last thing he needed was their manager’s yelling at them at the top of his lungs. The fangirls were enough. Plus, the things they had to do were stupid.

1) Go to the beach and spend the night there.

As much as Key liked the beach, staying all night did not sound fun. On the other hand, Taemin was ecstatic! >__>

2) Light three candles and keep them lit the whole night.

Are you serioud? There is no way to do that. Wait…toss that. Why would they do that? Key took extra care to pack the essentials for this trip, including flashlights. The boys were curious when Sunny and Yoona wanted them to carry candles…until they mentioned the third (and the most ridiculous request) on the list…

“Our tent and sleeping bags in place. Check. Food. Check. Water. Check. Flashlights. Check. Candles?” Onew peered through his bag to find the objects in question. “Check. I got them, hyung,” Taemin said, holding up the three candles. Onew breathed a sigh of relief. “Good! Jonghyun, you got the lighter, right?” Jjong held up the lighter to confirm Onew’s question. “Seems like we are set,” Minho smiled. Key crossed his arms with a “hmph” and turned his head away from the guys. “This is so stupid,” he grumbled. “Cmon, hyung, don’t be like that. It’s an adventure!” Key gave a begrudging stare at the maknae. “Yeah, I agree with the stick for once. Live a little, Key,” Jonghyun said, completely ignoring Taemin’s mini death glare. “Ok, that’s enough. Key, if you want, you can have first watch over the candles, so you don’t have to wake up later,” Onew suggested. All of them knew how cranky he could be when his beauty rest gets disrupted. “Yeah, whatever,” Key shrugged his shoulders with no care, though he was grateful. Just get it out the way early. “Cool! Then let’s begin,” Onew exclaimed and pumped his fist in the air. Clearly, he was excited too. Key thought they had all gone mad. Even so, he walked with his four companions towards the seashore yet staying far away from the water’s reach. All they carried were the candles and the lighter.

They found a smooth spot in the sand and placed the small candles in a triangular arrangement. Minho drew a large circle around the candles, just big enough for someone to sit in the circles as well. The boys stood around the circle, watching Jonghyun light the candles carefully. The small flames jumped and danced in the night wind. Key found the sight almost intriguing. Almost. The way they clung to life despite the size of the their obstacles…Wait, what was wrong with him? “So…who’s going to recite the phrase?” Everyone looked at Minho. Then they looked at each other. “I will!” Of course Taemin would.

Jonghyun quirked his eyebrows in amusement. “This will be funny,” he laughed. Taemin pouted at him but quickly regained his childlike smile. He jumped into the circle, spread out his arms, and lifted his head to the sky. “Ok, what do I say?” Onew used his flashlight to check the words written on the paper. “Um…repeat after me, ok?” Taemin nodded and waited. “Hey, don’t forget to be dramatic,” Jonghyun laughed. “Yeah, think of yourself in a movie, Taemin,” Minho urged. Key had to facepalm himself when he saw Taemin’s slowly rising his arms to heave, the dim light of the candles showing his serious expression. Onew recited the first phrase and Taemin repeated. “Heaven, I beseech thee!” Minho cracked up at Taemin’s booming voice.

“Lend your ears to the sea!”

Key seriously thought the ocean started to roar louder than usual.

“Our inquiries and hopes, give us an answer1

It was a coincidence that the wind started to blow more strongly…right? It was also amazing that the candles held on strongly to stay alive. At least, that was what Key thought.

“This is my prayer from these waters!”

A chill.

Key could tell it ran through the others because he saw the horrid expression on Taemin’s face. He also noticed how powerful the waves sounded.

Key turned to the ocean, and the chill that ran down his spine became stronger. The only way he could describe it was that the ocean was dancing. Rising. Falling. Rising. Falling. As if it was speaking to him…

And then…

Just as it suddenly started…

It ended. The ocean became mellow once again, leaving SHINee captivated. “What…was that?” Jonghyun’s question was left unanswered for the others were still trying to figure that out themselves.

“Taemin isn’t some super secret water priest, is he?” Onew asked in jest. “Awesome,” Taemin said, bewildered.

Minho noticed how Key was just staring out into the sea as if he was transfixed by an unseen force.

“Hyung…hyung! Yah, hyung~”

Minho walked up to Key and waved his hands in front of his face. “Are you there-“

“Live.”

The four boys snapped their heads to Key’s voice…no…something was odd about that voice.

That wasn’t Key.

“Key? What’s wrong with you?”

"Hikari…keep it alive. Live like the flames of those small candles. Do not live without…hikari…”

Key fell into a thud onto the sand.

*****

Key opened one of his eyes, fatigue still heavy on his body. The last thing he remembered was that he was standing on the beach…

And something overcame him…

“Key, you’re awake!”

The young man looked up at the source of the voice and saw his youngest dongsaeng with a worried expression on his face.

“Are you alright, hyung?”

Key nodded. Well, he was still foggy, but he didn’t want to give the young boy anymore worry. “Yeah~”

That was when he noticed that he was no longer outside on the beach, but in the tent that they made for the night.

The others were sound asleep, all huddled together to keep warmth from the sea air outside.

Key also noticed Taemin's tired expression. He really worried this kid, huh?

"Hey, you. Go to sleep. I'm ok. I just need to sleep. That's all."

Taemin looked skeptical at first, but he did as Key said and went to bed.

Making sure Taemin was tucked into bed, Key had flashbacks from the scene he last encountered.

Live. Hikari...don't let it die. Keep the flames alive like those small candles. You cannot live without hikari.

Key felt odd listening to those words. Did heaven speak through him just now? It couldn't be...

He took a glance at the four other boys in the tent.

The guys who had been with him for the past few years.

The guys who went from business partners to family members.

Key felt something...light in his chest. A feeling he hadn't felt in awhile.

Hikari. How long have I denied it?

Key felt himself drift back to sleep, however, with a new sense of living within his heart.

No longer drowning in his personal waters.

He finally reached heaven.
