God, don’t tell me we are supposed to get over this monstrosity of a hole to gain one step closer to freedom. Jaejoong hoped the answer was “no.” His flabbergasted expression never left his face as he stared at the open mouth of the earth. How are we even supposed to get over that thing?
Of course, God has a sense of humor, so of course He would take that as a cue to kick up a little wind, just enough to knock some dirt into Yoochun’s face, causing the dirtied gentleman to turn his head away to keep the dirt from flying into his eyes. Also, that moment would be the moment when Yoochun catches a glimpse of something stretching over the large chasm. Yoochun squinted his eyes to get a better visual of object. Once realization dawned on him, Yoochun tugged on his soulmate’s sleeve. “Hyung, look.”
Jaejoong peered in the direction Yoochun was pointing, catching sight of a possible answer to their dilemma. “Is that…a bridge?”
Sure enough, as the trio stepped closer to get a better view, the object in question was indeed a bridge…a long, rickety, worn-out bridge…
“Oh heck nah! We are not crossing that thing! That’s a death trap waiting to happen.”
Yoochun gave a deadpan look at Junsu. “You got better ideas, genius?”
The dolphin-voiced male returned the look to the dirtied gentleman. “Yeah: find another way across, genius.”
Jaejoong rolled his eyes at his dongsaengs’ arguing. “Is there another way across?”
The younger ones of the threesome glanced around their terrain (or what was left it, since there was a very noticeable portion of land missing). As far as their eyes could see, the group could see the vast length of the monstrous chasm only, and they saw no other alternative escape from their predicament. Because of the width of their obstacle, jumping to the other side would be humanly impossible. Their only other hope was the dirtied angel’s sudden sprouting of wings, which was not going to happen anytime soon. Junsu gave a low groan. “We’re gonna do this, aren’t we?”
Yoochun and Jaejoong stayed silent. Honestly, they knew of the strong risks involved in crossing that unsteady bridge. Low and behold, the wrong step in the wrong spot at the wrong time would result in a wrongful death. Every step had to be taken with caution. Hey, even their breathing would have to be in sync. This effort was going to take work…and skill…and luck…
Yoochun smirked. “I’m up for it.” The dirtied gentleman glanced at both of his brothers, awaiting their replies.
Jaejoong knew his answer, but something held him back. The obstacle ahead of them was daunting, but he felt more worried about a couple of other things. He didn’t say them out loud, but he didn’t need to. His soulmate could read him like a manga (like the otaku he is), so he knew Yoochun knew the reason for his hesitation. And Junsu…
“What about Yunho and Changmin?” Always count on Junsu’s innocence for the truth to be revealed. “Shouldn’t we wait?”
The question stung the eldest’s heart. Why would he not wait? Jaejoong love his dongsaengs dearly; he would never leave them behind if he had the choice. He and his brothers went through many tough times together, and he was determined to stand together through this one…if he had the choice. Jaejoong tightly clenched his fists when he started to remember an important conversation he had with their leader back in the cold barnhouse. Why? Why did you make me make that promise?
The fire that was blazing during their evening dinner had died down to a small ember, casting just enough light for the leader to see inside the cold barn house. It was his turn to keep watch and make sure they do not try to come for them in their most vulnerable position. After Yunho smashed the earrings/trackers, he decided to keep watch over his team for the night, ignoring the pleas of his brothers for him to get some sleep. The light of the fire reflected in Yunho’s eyes as he kept watch over the sleeping figures of his brothers. He found the sight of the four young men huddled together to keep their bodies warm quite amusing. Junsu snored softly while he lied across Changmin’s lower legs, and Yoochun was shifting in his sleep, trying to find a comfortable spot between the bundle of hay to his left and Changmin’s shoulder to his right. Changmin made a slight wheezing sound while he was breathing, his head tilted to this right side, leaning into his eldest hyung’s shoulder. Jaejoong had his eyes closed, supporting his head on top of the maknae’s head, not making a sound.
“Yah…Hyung,” Yunho whispered, “Are you asleep?”
The dirtied angel slightly scrunched his face before he peeked his eye open. “I was trying to.”
Yunho smirked. “I need to talk to you.” Jaejoong blinked a couple of times before sitting upright. He also stayed mindful of his sick dongsaeng, so he situated Changmin’s head in a better position once he got settled in a sitting position. After the task was done, Jaejoong turned his full attention on his leader, becoming serious when he saw Yunho’s no-nonsense expression.
“Well, what’s going through that head yours?”
Yunho frowned a little bit. He had been thinking for a while now, wondering about how his team would handle their current predicament. He also feared for the worst, and Yunho wanted to address the fear with the oldest of the group.
“Hyung, I need you to make me a promise.”
Jaejoong’s face grew more serious. “What is it?”
Yunho paused for a moment, trying to find the right words to express himself. After what felt like forever, he finally stated his request. “Promise me…if something happens to me or we get separated, you keep going and take care of the others.”
A sudden, loud snore erupted in the middle of the barnhouse, starting the two eldests. Yunho and Jaejoong calmed down once they found Junsu as the source of the outburst. The dolphin-voiced individual shifted in his sleep, turning his back on his hyungs. The leader turned his attention back to the dirtied angel. “So…will you promise me that, hyung?”
Jaejoong titled his head down in thought. “What are you planning?”
“Huh?” Yunho responded, “What do you mean?”
Jaejoong sighed. “I know you. You’re planning something. Do you plan to sacrifice yourself or something?”
Yunho remained silent.
Jaejoong glared at the young leader. “You idiot! Of course I would protect the others, no matter what! However…I would not abandon you either. Therefore, I could only keep part of that promise.”
Yunho suddenly stood up. “No! You have to keep going without me when worse comes to worse. You and the others cannot come after me. Understand?”
Angered, Jaejoong was about to get up to face his dongsaeng but suddenly remembered Changmin, who was sleeping on the dirtied angel’s shoulder. “What are you talking about? We’re all in this together. Where one goes, the rest follows. We can’t afford to lose each other.” Leaning a little closer to Yunho’s direction, he firmly whispered, “We have to stay together.”
Yunho just stared. Jaejoong stared back. The intense silence between the two men was unsettling, even to the point that Yoochun felt uncomfortable in his sleep, so he had change his sleeping posture once again, still unaware of the serious conversation between his hyungs.
Yunho silently walked to his hyung. Jaejoong wondered what his leader was up to. The leader knelt down in front of the dirtied angel, gazing into his round, brown orbs. He slowly placed his hand on Jaejoong’s unoccupied shoulder, grasping it firmly as if he wanted to make a point. “Hyung,” he calmly stated, “as the leader of this team, that is an order.”
Jaejoong’s eyes widened
