Fic in 2008

Dec 30, 2008 18:08

I was restless last night, so I redesigned the website; or rather, gave it something like a design at last: http://bironic.nostatement.com/

And then figured it was time for this year's fic roundup, such as it is. Nothing like December to make a person feel inadequate, between Yuletide (people are literate in so many fandoms!) and roundups (people wrote so many stories!)… Heh.

2008 fic list

( 2007 | 2006)

January

Substitute - SGA, John/Rod, 747 words

This was my first: Mensa!verse attempt. Unabashed pornlet. Unabashed kinky pornlet.
A line I love: Breathing hard, dripping sweat, he flexed around the unyielding length of it and shuddered with pleasure.

Thank God for oxoniensis and her Porn Battle, seriously. It spawned almost half the stories I posted this year. And this one, ha. I didn't realize it would become "that SGA fic with the golf club," but I'm not sorry. Just goes to show that if you write something you think is hot, even if it's weird, someone else will probably think it's hot too.

No Pain - House, House/Wilson, 790 words

This was my first: Posted vampire story.
A line I love: Wilson's pulse leapt when House pressed his face into his neck, nuzzling at the thin skin over his artery.

Vampires. House and Wilson. Need more be said? Okay: I'd been looking for an excuse to write a House/Wilson vampire story, even had lines scribbled down for it, and the "analgesia" prompt served nicely. The sequel I picked away at for a couple of months never got anywhere, but daasgrrl's happily did.

Too Long - House/SGA, Wilson/Sheppard, 2,070 words

This was my first: Crossover, hurrah. Story with an alternate scene.
A line I love: "I'm busy trying to decide if letting Sonic the Hedgehog here blow you in the middle of your office makes you more or less of an idiot than when you were doing Debbie in Accounting in the third-floor supply closet."

Because Wilson and Sheppard are nice to look at and deserve to share scenes more often. I was very happy to add to the (growing but still small) collection of House/SGA stories out there, even if this one didn't have much substance to it.

April

Sestina: John - SGA, John, 500 words

This was my first: Hm. This might not have been a first. Oh, no, wait, it was the first SGA sestina when I started it. It just took, oh, a few months longer to finish than "An Unanticipated Side Effect…"
A line I love: As the lights flicker on, white and blue as the sea, it's as if John wakes / too.

I love the beginning of this, and moments in the middle, and the end, but the transitions in between are clunky, the lines trying to cover too much. jadesfire2808 says it better in her commentary. Still, quite happy to have finished it.

Thirteen Ways of Looking at Rodney - SGA, Rodney, 250 words

This was my first: Deliberate imitation of a preexisting poem, I think.
A line I love: O morons of Atlantis, / Why do you imagine kinder tongues?

This was all nightdog_barks's fault, and I thank her profusely for it. And then jadesfire2808 did something awesome with it, and I was reminded again of how fandom is a wonderful thing.

A Princeton Odyssey (Alexander Pope Is Turning In His Grave Remix) - House, House + Wilson + Cuddy, 2,600 words

This was my first: Story in iambic pentameter? Heroic couplets? Mock-epic? Silly gen adventure? Take your pick.
A line I love: "You were a worthy Foe!" came House's cry. / Kind Wilson used his Scarf to pat him dry.

Did I mention that this crawled along at 100 words an hour? But what a ride it was. I'm really proud of this one. I think it succeeded equally well as a remix and as a story of its own. The rest I said in the DVD commentary.

October

Projection - House, Wilson/Ali, Wilson/House UST, 2,200 words

This was my first: At the time, the time being two years ago, it was going to be my first posted dialogue-free story, and the first written in a weird tense. The tense got changed, but it did turn out to be my first conduit!fic.
A line I love: Then he makes her tell him what she wants to do to House.

I should only count about 200 of these words for the year's total, since the rest of it was done last year and the year before. Good thing, too, or else the remix would've been the last thing I posted in 2008. I've read "Projection" too many times to tell if the sex is sexy, but I like the concept of Wilson fantasizing about being with Ali instead of House being with Ali, without quite realizing what he's turned it into by the end.

The end.

Total: 7 stories/poems in two fandoms; 9,100 words. (Three more fics but 17,000 fewer words than last year.) Plus 5,000 words of WsIP. We'll see if some of those words end up being posted by the end of the week.

I didn't have any resolutions last year, which is probably a good thing, because they would all have failed. Next year I think I would like to:

  • Finish the tentacle story.
  • Continue to not anguish over not writing much.
  • Post more gen and het, when I do write, because people seem to identify me as a slasher, and I'm not only that. This year, I wrote three slash, three gen, and a het plus slash-UST.
