Prologue

The library was Jensen’s favorite part about Jackson College. It was refurbished from an old barn and tucked away in the corner of the small campus. It was always quiet, especially late at night or on Sunday afternoons when most students would rather be anywhere else than stuck inside studying.

But Jensen loved it, always had felt a certain peace in the solitude when he could just be by himself to think, or do his homework, or read; especially to read.

The lower floors of the school’s library were bright with natural light spilling in from the plate glass windows lining every wall.

It was cold in the lower parts, windows old and not well sealed. But Jensen’s favorite spot was the loft, at the very top of the building. It was warm and cozy, especially at night during the winter when he could watch the snow piling up on the one sky light, with only a small table lamp beside him to read by, curled up in an armchair. Most nights he would end up falling asleep until close when the last student employee came to rouse him.

It was the first Friday of Jensen’s junior year and he was holed up in the basement, sitting cross-legged on the floor with an old issue of Aperture open in his lap.

It was early evening and the sun was just beginning to sink slowly towards the horizon, jets of bright orange light filtering in through the grimy windows, blocked by the tall shelves towering over Jensen on either side of him.

He sneezed, allergies getting to him down in the basement where everything was coated in a thick layer of dust, oversized books and back logged magazines that no one had touched since the late 60s. Jensen was skimming through an article on Duane Michaels and his effect on the queer visual culture, and nearly jumped out of his skin when his cell phone started vibrating against his thigh, tucked tight in his front pocket.

His heart skipped a beat and he smirked at himself, glad the empty darkness was his only witness. He slid it out of his pocket and looked down at the ID-Chris- before flipping it open and continuing to flick through the magazine absentmindedly.

“Hey,” he greeted closing the magazine and sliding it back into the empty spot between v.110 and v.112.

“Hey Jenny, sup?” He could hear the grin in Chris’s voice and he rolled his eyes at the nickname Chris only ever used when not within punching distance.

“What do you want?” Jensen went for serious annoyance, but it got lost in the affection he could never manage to keep out of his voice where Chris was concerned.

“Your ass, always Ackles.” Chris supplied without missing a beat and Jensen grinned again, uncurled his legs, stretching them out in front him, bones cracking in ways he was pretty sure they really shouldn’t be for a twenty-one year old.

“Yeah, yeah so you say but then you go and freak out when I try to give you a friendly hand job in the shower.” Jensen bit at his lip to stifle the laughter at the scoffing coming from the other end of the phone.

“Images Jensen,” Chris shivered voice low and loud in the receiver. “But really, I was calling to see if you wanted to go into town to grab a pizza.”

“Time is it?” Jensen asked nonchalantly collapsing back against the shelf behind him.

“Almost six,” Chris replied, his voice lost some of the humor, like he knew what Jensen was thinking, what Jensen was doing.

“Wh-who’s going?” He asked.

“Just me, Jason, Steve, couple of Steve’s buddies and this new girl he thinks he has a chance with, poor fucker.”

“Uh…”

“C’mon Jen. It’ll be for like an hour…” Chris’s voice was heavy with obvious disappointment.

“I dunno I ha-“

“You have nothing Jensen, I know for a fact that the whole hour of homework you got this week you finished barely a half an hour after it was assigned, so get your perfectly pert and perky ass over here now because we are going out for pizza and you are going to enjoy it!” Jensen flushed at the comment and nodded before realizing he was an idiot and quite possibly too stupid for college and he replied with a quiet,

“Yea sure, just wait for me, kay? I don’t wanna be stuck in a car with people I don’t know…again…so just-“

“I know Jenny,” Chris’s grin was back and before Jensen could tell him how much he hated him Chris hung up. Jensen scowled and grabbed his backpack, pulling himself up off of the floor using the shelf for leverage.

He took his time walking the short distance back to his building, half hoping if it took long enough they’d get sick of waiting and leave without him. No such luck though because he saw as he turned the corner that Chris was waiting for him on the stoop, cigarette butt hanging out of his mouth; he grinned around it and waved at Jensen.

Jensen smiled softly back and collapsed down next to him.

Chris shoved against him with his shoulder and Jensen smiled light and real before standing up. “Gotta drop my bag off, be out in a minute.”

“Better be.” Chris said with his head tipped upside down to watch as Jensen disappeared into the building. It wouldn’t be the first time he flaked out, found some lame excuse to get out of hanging out.

Too much homework, or really tired tonight man, sorry, rain check? There’s a show on I’ve been waiting all week to watch dude, maybe next time. It wasn’t like Jensen hated his friends; it wasn’t even like he hated people really.

He was fine when he hung out with Chris and more than a few times he was told he was being too loud and annoying for his own good and to please shut the hell up. But when he was around a lot of people, or people he didn’t know very well, it was like someone fed him stupid juice and all he could manage to do was smile and nod and not even that half the time.

He always tripped over his words on the simplest of questions like, what’s your major? This girl he kinda sorta had a crush on his freshman year, who was always really nice to him during class, he found out later only ever gave him the time of day because she thought he was special needs.

But it wasn’t like this…whatever, debilitating shyness was his fault. So what if most people would rather get a root canal than stay on campus on the weekends? Jensen just wasn’t the party guy. Sure he partook in his share of deviant activities it came with the whole college thing.

His friends were loud and obnoxious and they cared enough about him to drag him off to parties despite his kicking and screaming. But Jensen just figured he had more important things he could be doing than hanging around a bunch of drunken guys who could have deep conversations with potted plants.

And although Jensen was mostly okay with who he was (he had friends, it wasn’t like he was that kid in that single in Best who smelled like cheese and talked to stuffed animals, he might be a loner, but he wasn’t a loser) he did sometimes wish he could be different, be comfortable and loose and take down the walls he’d managed to encase himself behind after years of being the nice guy everyone managed to take advantage of, but he figured nobody was really happy all the time, right?
