Maybe I'm missing something, but when I tell Firefox 3 to accept cookies, I was under the impression it would remember about sites that record my login info in a cookie, and use that cookie to auto-log me in, like Firefox 2 did. Not like I am about to strain a knuckle or anything, but some of my login passwords are required to be huge and hard to ( Read more... )

It's under security in option. The saved passwords are different from cookies.

Mine keeps me logged in to a lot of things until I say otherwise with the settings I have.

Cookies are merely a way for sites to store "their" information on your computer, and it may be login information, it may not. Typically, cookies have an expiration date (due to the fat content:), set by the site in question. Some sites explicitly say "Keep me logged in today", others don't mention it, but most sites use it. Thus they cannot keep your login information forever. FF's password remembering system can, however, as long as the page in question doesn't change so much that FF can't figure out what to put where. You can feel pretty sure that FF keeps the cookies around properly until they expire, but what the sites do with them and when they expire is entirely up to each site.

Well, I haven't been having the issues you describe, so I would guess your settings are borked.

Try clearing all your private data, first (Ctrl-Shift-Del) check everything.

Then check these settings:

Tools -> Options -> Privacy
*Cookies: checked
*Private Data: "Always clear my private data when I close Firefox" unchecked

Tools -> Options -> Security
*Passwords: "Remember passwords" checked

Thank you for the responses, but I really do mean cookies, and not saved passwords. I mean it's the cookies the websites save my login info in to. I tell Livejournal to keep me logged in, and it does not. I tell Photobucket to keep me logged in, and it does not. I tell Dumbrella, SomethingAwful, and a dozen other sites to keep me logged in, and it does not. Livejournal has been telling me, "Your login cookie seems to have disappeared?"

I want to know how to turn that feature back on, because I had it with FF2. (in before black mage jokes)

Check to make sure the folder your cookie files are in isn't read-only or something.

Also, are you running any antivirus or privacy software? Because those can eat cookies.

Make sure that none of your addons or extensions are interfering with the cookies, too.

You might try and set up a new, clean profile and see if things work there. If they do, that means something is blocking or corrupting your cookies on your default profile.

Also, try deleting (back them up first) the cookies and cookie settings files ("cookies.sqlite" and "permissions.sqlite"). Do a search in your my documents folder.
