Oh man, I love this. Can you imagine if we got something like it in canon?!? Gah. (Shh, I can dream.) The moment where Sam really looks at Dean and sees all the details on his face (freckles!) was especially wonderful.

This brought tears to my eyes and gave me a heavy heart. *sighs*

Dean is normally so much ~larger than life. He has so much ~presence. And you took that away from him with a few strokes of your keyboard. It's like his ~essence wasn't there anymore, and only now, when it might be too late, after whatever ritual they performed, do Sam and Cas actually realize and really, really see Dean again. Just Dean, not the caretaker, not the obnoxious brother, not the bearer of the Mark of Cain. Just Dean.

This is gorgeous, for all the Dean reasons, and also all the Sam reasons and the Cas reasons. <333 But this line is perfect: pretending to be asleep for reasons that only make sense when you're not quite awake yet. It's such a little, throwaway sentiment, in the scheme of things, but it. is. perfect.
