Solo ruthless low-lifes, Dean gets. But he's never done well with the manicured type, the whole imperial thing; he's not sure what to do with that, except extend it an equal measure of hatred. Maybe there's nothing wrong with the menagerie lifestyle, the kind of people who go on building up rubber rooms filled with trinkets and weird little hors' d oeurves--granted, when all the trinkets are deadly weapons and you're eating braised skinwalker, chances are you're a psycho fuck no matter which way you slice it. But Dean doesn't get it. And that bothers him, because "I know you, Dean

Turns out the Mark of Cain has some physical effects. It makes him stronger and makes him feel less pain. But it pumps him full of adrenaline so that he is always feeling wired and anxious and can never sleep. The only way he can really calm himself down and get some rest is with alcohol. He tries to hide these effects from Sam.

They need to save Castiel's life in the morning, so they agree to get some sleep. They've got a solid four hours before the meet up, and Sam knows they can't fill anywhere near that much time with conversation. They've filled thirty years with the same long talk, and they're reaching the tail-end of their beleaguered sequels

It's 5:41, two minutes before Sam's alarm's supposed to go off. It's still dark, heavy curtains blocking out even the polluted glare of the city in the morning mist. The door unlocks and Dean walks in. He flips the lights and double-takes in Sam's direction, like he's not exactly sure what to do with the image of Sam sitting there, squinting in the sudden glow and smoothing back his hair. After an incongruent beat, Dean swims back from the depths of his own head and says "hey

WOW, I love this so much. You put so much great characterization and meaning into a fic that only spans like 4 hours. It was a really cool choice to put it in a missing scene during 9x18, I hadn't even thought about the missing time there. I loved your Sam characterization, the image of him playing that breathing game and the purpose being to "feel invisible, and then disembodied. All-powerful." Ahh, that's so perfect. And of course Dean broke my heart too, I liked how from Sam's POV we only get a glimpse of what Dean's insomnia must be like but what we know is so painful. Thanks for such a great fill for my prompt!
How did Dean wind up on the floor with Gadreel after interrogating him in 9x18? What was going through his mind when Sam found him? How long had he been sitting there like that?
So many wonderful prompts. I love them all. I couldn't figure out what happened in this scene. Did Dean drag Gadreel out of the circle and beat him? Did Gadreel try to escape while Dean was taking out his pound of flesh? That Dean managed to subdue an angel is a bit frightening on its own.

Warning for brief violent imagery (stabbing), Dean struggling to deal with trauma, and a Cain and Abel reference. Set before 9x18, so no spoilers past 9x17. On a much, much lighter note, warning for hastily googled research on how to fix car paint scratches. (this is misterdeanvimes on tumblr

This is such a wonderfully painful snapshot! Especially these lines killed me: "If he were a car he could be used for anything and it wouldn't hurt. If he were a person, he wouldn't have to be useful." Ouuch. Your writing style is really lovely, and of course I know from tumblr that you have a great handle on Dean's character but it comes through so well in this fic too. Thanks so much for contributing!
