Wow, that is a great picture and worth the splinter! I hope it works its way out soon though as I know what a pain those can be. 55 mile ride sounds really good. In this country it would take me a good way towards anywhere in England and I think probably some parts of Wales too:) I know my grandfather used to ride to the Welsh coast in the summer and I am fairly sure they used to ride to Cornwall to go surfing too which is several hundred miles. I wish it were still easy to do that now.
I always have to readjust my thinking when it comes to miles in Europe.
When watching the Tour De France, I'd see how they'd pass through/near other countries, whereas in some sections of the U.S... that would be several cities/counties within the same state.
Even within our own borders, the states on the Eastern seaboard are often so much smaller than California.
Personally, I think I'd feel more accomplished if I felt a day's ride would take me half way across a state. To go half way down California would take me probably a week's ride.
When you were mentioning Cornwall, and people biking out to go surfing, my first thought was of people biking hundreds of miles with surfboards attached to their bikes...
Back then it was the big and heavy wooden longboards. It would probably have been in the 1930s so nothing you could fit on a bike, or probably even a truck!
I don't think the sea is particularly cold here, but the popular surfing places are in the gulf stream anyways so it isn't terrifyingly cold. If you want to experience true chilliness you need to check out the north sea. Only the scots and the insane go willingly into that:)
So when I was skimming through journals late late last night/early early in the morning, I thought "wow, that's a gorgeous picture!" But then I thought it wouldn't be fair to just comment on the picture, but not read the post... (and my brain cells were in no shape to read at that point) So I decided to hold off until today. And now that I've read it, I can go with my initial comment of "that's a gorgeous (and much appreciated) picture!" :] Hope that splinter comes out without too much trouble. :/

But just as I was going to get on my bike, I figured I would take a pic otherwise my pain was in vain. I flipped up my camera, shot and pedaled off.
I actually didn't think much about the composition until your comment. Yeah, it isn't half bad :)
