Star Trek

Matchmaker, Matchmaker (Kirk/Spock) - A fic put out this week that should be pimped EVERYWHERE. Basically, it's Q trying to get Kirk and Spock together because he got in trouble and the other Q want him to make it right. I know now shit about TNG or the Q besides their basic definition, but you don't have to know

I say and write "pants" exclusively, but I doesn't really bother me to see "trousers" in fic. I've heard the thing about pants=underwear, so I can see why people use trousers.. and actually since hearing that it's made me a little paranoid every time I type "pants" because I don't want a reader to think I'm talking about underwear when I'm not.. But anyway, PANTS. Either is fine to read, but I use pants exclusively.

I mean, I know what trousers are, so it wouldn't be SUPER distracting in fic. It would be weirder in, say, a Supernatural fic than a Star Trek one. But I would never use it in my ordinary speech or anything.

You're definitely right about it being weird in a Supernatural fic. Because while you can make the stretch and say, "well, maybe 200 years from now, the language will shift and they do interact across continents and planets for fuck's sake," Sam and Dean are in the here and now and are wholly American in all respects.

Pants in my native dialect, trousers if I'm, say, writing in a UK fandom or in the UK at the time trying to talk to my relatives. (One time I was there, I was about ten and wanted a Band-Aid and ended up having to locate my dad to translate for me because my aunt had no clue what I meant. I wanted a plaster, apparently.)

However, I would be highly likely to talk about trousers in the context of military uniforms, even in the US. (This US Army uniform FAQ I randomly found seems to use "trousers," "slacks," and "pants" interchangeably, but more trousers/slacks than pants.) So I can see myself writing "trousers" in Trek fandom, probably. Assuming you're talking about pieces of the uniform, that is.

That's a good point with trousers/pants, the military aspect. I should totally just bring old words back and just say it's Standard slang. Perhaps 'knickers' or 'britches' like my grandma says. :D
