Tonight, Merlin was going to try the meditations that Lady Ghanima had been working on with him. Maybe he could figure out how to stop the whole... furniture moving business without asking her. Because, good god, you did NOT ask a lady about that ( Read more... )

Dinah was wandering after talk with Tahiri, thinking deep thoughts. In a quest to avoid them, she climbed up a floor and tapped on the slightly open door. "Helloooooo."

...Merlin gave her a look there.

"I--I believe in Arthur. I promised to serve him until the day I died."

"Sooooo." Dinah blinked at him, not trying to be judge-y, just not getting it. "You're on-call? 24-7? 365 days a year?" She frowned. "Really? Is it like that for all the knights too? And the other servants?"

"For a servant? No. A knight swears loyalty to their king," Merlin replied slowly. "Arthur will be a good king when the time comes and he earned my loyalty."

"Well sure." Dinah waved that last bit off as being a fact, one that didn't need debate at all. "So you're like... okay. You're training to be more than a knight, or a servant, or... kind of like Secret Service, hunh?" she checked, realizing. "Oooo."

"They're the guys that protect the President here with their lives," Dinah said, nodding. "They can kill anybody who threatens him, but if that doesn't do the job." She stopped, lip wibbling. Because bad. "Um. They're supposed to jump in front of bullets or whatever in order to save him." She stared at Merlin, finding this metaphor way too apt. "Noooo!"

Well... he had killed a lot of people who threatened Arthur already...

"I suppose that's a bit accurate."

Dinah had to pounce-hug him at that. "Okay and I'd be really proud of you for having such a cool vocation and life calling and all that but I don't want you to die of it, Merlin!"

Merlin hugged her back, still more than a bit confused. "I try not to die," He assured her.

"I know," Dinah said, biting her lip, blinking really hard as squeezed him. "People always do. It just happens sometimes." She took a breath. "And I know you're smart, and really good at magic, maybe even great, hard to say when you won't turn me into a kitten," she tried to joke. "I just. It's just." She gulped. "Scares me. For you."

Sighing softly, he just held on. "Some things are more important than the life of one man."

There is no crying in crimefighting, Dinah tried to tell herself. There is no crying in protecting a king! "Uh-hunh." She pulled away to nod, so he could see she got it. Really got it. That it wasn't a rank or a class thing, or thinking Arthur was entitled or something. Just. What Merlin needed to do. "I didn't get it before," she tried to explain.

"I know." Most people just didn't.

Took me long enough, Dinah thought, but then, sometimes Merlin just stopped explaining and gave you a frustrated look. And then she'd quit asking. She sniffed, and nodded hard. "'Kay. Um. It would be hard. To have a family, or a girlfriend, with all that." She sighed. "But you've got friends to look out for you there, right? Gwen, and, and, Morgana would check on you too." That helped. "Somebody has to watch out for you, while you watch out for Arthur."
