Suck it!

This picture fills me with so much joy, my friends. You might recall that I'm not a fan of Evgeny Plushenko. He came in second to 18-year-old Maxim Kovtun at Russian Nationals this week and will apparently not be competing in Sochi in singles. IT'S A CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!

You may remember that I AM a Plushenko fan :) but I'm not at all surprised by this news... and I thought I was only a little disappointed. Because I think it would be much better to go out on a high and know that you were kickass-awesome in your prime than struggle to compete against 18 year olds ( ... )

No, in Russia they basically do whatever they want, LOL. There are no rules as there are in other countries -- they name whoever they want to the team. So it seems Plushy isn't out yet. But Kovtun has earned it and judging by Plushy's performance this week in the long program...he just doesn't have what it takes anymore. There were a few brilliant jumps, but the program was so slow and sloppy and just...oy. However, he is a fierce competitor and you can't count him out until the fat lady actually sings!

Hee. Skating talent (or any kind of athletic talent) aside, I despise bad sportsmanship (I'll hate John "I'm a Special Snowflake" Elway 'til the day one of us dies) and I think Plushenko deserves to have his whiny little ass paddled.

I agree! He's a terrible loser and always has been. I just can't stand his attitude.

That picture is hilarious xDD.. if Plushenko ends up going I think everybody who loves this sport will be very upset since he doesn't deserve it.. Politics can be a terrible thing in Russia..

I thought he wasn't going to the Europeans.. do you know about that?

According to news reports, it's confirmed that he's not on the entry list for Europeans and that the Russian men will be Kovtun, Voronov and Menshov. They still say they will make a decision on the team after Europeans, so the pressure is definitely on Maxim to deliver again.

Interesting that B/S are not going to Europeans. Perhaps because they are afraid they will be beaten. I really feel they are undeserving of the Olympic bronze medal, but it seems they will win it barring mistakes. I would put Weaver/Poje and the French and Italian teams above both the Russian teams. But with the Olympics in Russia, politics will be in full effect. :/

I hope Javier does well in Budapest! Has not been a good season for him so far. :((

Well, I didn't know that. I'm really gonna miss B/S.. hell, I was looking forward a LOT to see them.. this is very sad.. must say that I do love them after last year. They were amazing. I also like Weaver/Poje a LOT, they are great, but what can I say, I love B/S even more. I've not seen Weaver/Poje live.. I'd need to do that to be objective.. I wasn't a B/S fan until I saw them live. I think it will depend on that day (for me).

Kovtun was great last year so I trust he'll do it again and he can go to the olympics.

I don't know about Javier.. it seems to me like he doesn't have special programs (I'm not a fan of them) like last year and he's not centered or whatever he's going through.. so I don't expect him to do amazing.. we'll see.. maybe he's improved.. no idea.

Is there any list online of who is going to the Europeans?

I liked B/S well enough at Worlds in London, but this year I can't stand their free dance and they've been so over-marked for sloppy performances. Being so many points ahead of W/P at Cup of Russia was nonsense. Sigh.

Hmm, for entires maybe check the ISU site? I just know of the Russians because I was Googling for Plushy news.

Yeah, agree about Javier's programs and his heart just doesn't seem in it, which is odd for an Olympic season! Hope things will turn around...
