Yeah, you know, I had a comment in my last post about being disappointed with all of the underachievement -- and I still kind of am, just because it's sad that so many medal hopefuls have actually fallen well short of the podium. But I removed it, because it sounded as if I was being what I've hated, which is this non-stop blathering about what failures we've been. I'm sad for THEM, and I always am, because I'm sure there were a lot of hopes and dreams about performing well at home. Eh, anyway.
Original dance was SO GOOD! I just rewatched Virtue and Moir online because I was watching nervously the first time -- ARGH. SO GOOD. SO CRISP. SO BEAUTIFUL. They rose to the occasion wonderfully, and I'm so happy for them.
And I am also so, so happy that the Russians didn't score high (though 3rd is still too high, but whatever) because that shit is crazy. As much as I've bitched about CTV, I did like the open disdain that they let loose today for the costumes, because it was richly deserved.

Exactly. I'm disappointed for the athletes, not for myself. I always remember after Kurt Browning's short program in 1994 and he cried in his interview and said he was sorry he let us all down. I just wanted to hug him and tell him that we weren't the ones getting up at the crack of dawn and working our asses off for years and years. I was only ever sorry for him and his own disappointment.
I couldn't watch Tessa and Scott live! I had to wait until I heard the commentators squee, and then I rewound so I could enjoy it. Oh, I'm so nervous for tonight. Eeeek.
Yes, LOL at Rod, Jennifer and Victor ripping up the Russians' costumes. Couldn't agree more!
Given the guidelines for the original dance which clearly indicated that it should be based on a "real" folk culture - I have no idea how the Russians scored as highly as they did on this one. I couldn't tell if it was meant to be Australian Aboriginals or some sort of Pacific Islander culture - whatever, it was more like something out of a book by Robert Louis Stevenson than an interpretation of an actual folk culture. I hated it with a deep and abiding passion. And, candidly, I didn't think they were technically all that good. There were times when they were slightly out of sync - unlike the Canadians who were simply magical.
I am so enjoying seeing this stuff. We never - like never - get any of the skating events on TV here, so I try to make the most of the chance to watch during the Olympics.
It was supposed to be Australian, but yeah, it was terrible. Terrible! The choreo just wasn't strong at all and their skating was mediocre. Belbin/Agosto should have been in third.
So glad you're enjoying the skating! I just love it. (Gee, in case that wasn't obvious, heh.)
But I am so delighted that Moir and Virtue won. They were wonderful They just gave me goosebumps in the free program.
I'm just sorry that the ice dancing is over. I like the figure skating, but to be honest, it's the ice dancing that truly captivates me. There is something so expressive in it, when it's good it's simply magical.
The current crop of Russians just aren't that strong. I'm so meh on all of them, and I've loved so many Russians in the past. Hee, that's so cute your mom remembers the Russian coachs! I love Zoueva and Shpilband the most. I could watch their choreo all day.
I have such a crush on Tessa and Scott, too. Love!
I have a horrible sinus infection, so I feel like exhausted crap both physically and emotionally, so I went to bed before the final group skated, but I did see the Russians "dance," and OMG, it was awful. The "music" was unpleasant and not musical at all (sorry, Maoris, but I would hate to see anyone try skating to rap, too), the costumes laughable, and the dancing dull. I couldn't figure out why on earth they got such a high score, so I'm pleased they've been outranked.
Just out of curiosity, why does ice dancing have 3 components/competitions when all the other skating events only have 2?
You should definitely watch Virtue/Moir and Davis/White!
The singles skating used to have school figures (where the skaters traced figure eights and the like to show their edgework) and the compulsories are sort of like that. However the ISU is likely voting in June to scrap compulsories and combine them somehow with the OD so there would only be two components.
Life is full of cruel fates, not many more cruel than this moment for Joannie. I am pleased that she plans to skate, as I'm sure her Mother would want that, yet, if she finds she can't, I'm with her on her decision
( ... )
Marina Zoueva and Igor Shpilband are the best in the biz as far as I'm concerned! G/G were so wonderful.
I'm sure they felt there was no room for them in the Zueva and Spilband camp, but they certainly didn't leave for a better camp, IMO.
Yeah, I can understand why they felt they needed a change and more singular attention, but I don't think they've really improved since they left.
They put so much hard work and time into the preparations leading to these games. I wish somehow the coverage wouldn't blow up each athlete's chances at medaling and just let the events happen. In any grand events, such as the Olympics, there are sweet triumps and crushing losses. That is the nature of sport. I am enjoying these games, and am already wondering what to do when they have extinguished the flame.
