I ::heart:: New York

Jan 13, 2009 20:12

bliss_ and I had a fab weekend in NYC (our "date weekend," heh) and kept very busy seeing Broadway shows. We did get to see susanderavish, nutmeg3, queenofthorns and jaydk, which was lovely, of course. SDV, we look forward to eating at "Male Name's Burritos" again next time! (We've done both Harry's Burritos and Benny's Burritos now.) Bliss and I also got to try one of the famed Magnolia ( Read more... )

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I miss NYC and cannot wait to go back!!!

I need a fellow canuck to bitch too. First, I am so not looking forward to the -19 weather on Thursday. Why!? And of course those are the days where the ttc won't work. And secondly, I hate A channel for a)switching days for Gossip Girl and b)Not adding the "next on" feature that the CW has.

How did you meet all those friends? I barely know anyone in my RL who has LJ!

I guess I'm just lucky! :)

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the cold snap either. But A Channel had to switch GG because they can only show it a day early if they have a conflict (as they did with SCC before). And Canadian networks never show previews they didn't make themselves because of Canadian content rules -- they need to show a couple more commercials.

I live in the wrong city/state. Way too big of a Broadway fan to be on the west coast. On the other hand, I do get good touring casts and some OBC members since I live in Los Angeles. Still. :| I was thinking about flying somewhere to see the touring cast again. I do not want the tour to end without me seeing it again.

Hunter for the total win. He got all sick and still performed?! What a trooper.

Yeah, I'm lucky being relatively close to NYC and also being in Toronto, which gets all the major tours and often has North American premieres (Mamma Mia back in the day, currently the Sound of Music revival) as well as our own productions.

I'm definitely seeing the SA tour when it's here in March/April! I can't wait to see them.

Hunter was SUCH a trooper. Clearly no one wants to call out a week before closing. It really didn't show in his acting at ALL, just in a couple of notes as I mentioned. Truly I was amazed to hear the difference between his voice on stage and afterwards. He was so spent. He's been filming a movie every Monday, too, so as well as being sick, he's just exhausted. His plans after the 18th undoubtedly include sleeping for days.

Matt Doyle was actually getting ready to go on as Melchi, but at 5:30 Hunter said he'd be okay and he wanted to do it. I'm SO glad, because as freaking awesome as Matt Doyle was when we saw him in November, I really wanted to see his Hanschen, and Hunter's Melchi. Luckily it all worked

Hunter is incredible for having to go through all that! I bet the guy is totally wiped out from Broadway and filming. And can I just say that I'm mourning all these closings? I actually thought I could swing a visit this year but with all the closings, there isn't anything that I want to see that I haven't seen already or that I'm going to see touring.

I think that SA needs to have a permanent home somewhere in the way that Wicked has almost permanent status in Chicago, just wrapped up in LA and going up to San Francisco, etc. :(

Yeah, Hunter was a trooper for sure. I'm so grateful he dug deep and went on.

I totally agree about a permanent SA. When they announced the Broadway closing, they mentioned new productions in 2009 in Helsinki, London, Seoul, somewhere else in Europe, and in Toronto. I still haven't heard a peep about the Toronto production actually happening, but obviously it would be v.v. awesome if it did.

Of course, with Wicked, it has longer staying power because it's so family friendly. :/

I really wanted to go to the Upright Cabaret but being an ocean away right now made it a no go. I'm glad to hear that Billy Eliot is good, I'm still a bit worried about the flying ballet because I find that stuff so tacky but I think the rest of the show should make up for it!

Well I would have been very sad to have found out after the fact that you'd been there, too! But it was a great show, and they said Joe's Pub has already asked them back, so you'll get your chance.

The flying part in the Swan Lake dream was actually pretty cool. It's only a part of it, and I have to say it looked really fun, heh. But even if you don't like it, there's so much other good stuff. I mean, it's a fairly cheesy family show, but I loved it. It was definitely a crowd pleaser. :)

It really was! I'm sooo glad we got to see you this time. Thanks again for coming into the city, and I'm so glad you made the train! xo

Magnolia Bakery is famed for its cupcakes, I think because of that "Lazy Sunday" SNL skit from a couple of years ago? But I could be wrong. Anyway, the cupcakes are just vanilla or chocolate with buttercream icing, but they really are quite tasty.
