I actually had trouble sleeping because I was thinking about Jessica's injury. I know that sounds silly, but when you follow the sport closely, you form attachments to the skaters, and I like her and Bryce so much. Anyway, here's the update for those who asked me to keep them posted:
The latest news from CBC is that she "was examined by a facial trauma specialist and later underwent surgery to repair a laceration on her left cheek and nose." There's also an article
here that gives a bit more detail.
Bryce Davison knelt over his fallen partner Jessica Dube, agonized concern pummelling his face, as medics jammed towels into the spurting gash in her left cheek.
Seconds earlier, Davison's left skate had caught her below the left eye during side-by-side camel spins during yesterday's freeskate finale of the Four Continents Championship. As the sparse crowd gasped in shock, Dube's head and neck recoiled from the impact and she plummeted to the ice.
Dube was taken off the ice by stretcher and rushed to Memorial Hospital by ambulance, with Davison and International Skating Union medical adviser Jane Moran riding with her.
The gash was deep and long, but apparently did not shatter any bones, although there could be some cartilage damage. A couple of centimetres higher or lower it could have been much, much worse.
Holy shit that is a lot of blood under her:
And one of my fave pics from happier times, after their Olympic free skate, where they placed 10th in only their first year as senior skaters:
Hopefully there will be more news later today. I cannot even imagine how horrible Bryce must feel. Male pairs skaters are trained to do everything they can to protect their partners during lifts and throws in case of a fall, but you never expect accidents like this.
