My Harry Potter Experience

Am I the only one who never gave a rat's about the whole HP phenomenon? I read the first novel in one sitting, thought it was entertaining, though highly derivative of much more original and more interestingly written young adult fiction from the early to mid 20th century (Baum, Blyton, Eager, Enright, Kongingsberg, Nesbit, Ransome, to name a few ( Read more... )

When the first film came out, one of the local movie reviewers admonished us to "get off your high horse and join the culture". So we checked it out. I didn't feel like my money was wasted, but neither did I feel any desire to read the books or watch the sequels (though we have caught bits on television over the years). I've got a tremendous hard-on for Robbie Coltrane as Hagrid, but that's about the only thing in the whole phenom that speaks to me.

I have no plans to see this film. I saw one of the earlier movies; it was entertaining, but not having read the books, it was a bit confusing to follow. The only redeeming thing about the entire Harry Potter phenomenon is that it is extremely popular and it makes the fundamentalist Christians apoplectic. For that, I'm sad to see it fade away.

I'd seen the first movie and avoided the books like that plague. I saw more of the movies on TV long after they were in the theatres and got interested at about movie #5 - now the story seemed to be going somewhere.

I picked up all the books at that time (last year?) and read them all. Real kiddie-fare at the beginning, but they do get more adult and I really enjoyed the last 2. She's not a great writer, but the HP world is quite interesting.

I've never cared much about the whole HP phenomenon either. Never read any of the books and seen only the first three movies. The movies aren't bad, pretty entertaining but I could live without them. The only thing I like about HP are Dumbledore and Hagrid. They should be their own seperate series!

They recently interviewed this literary expert on comparing HP to classic British works like the Chronicles of Narnia and the Lord of the Rings series - saying that the characters and mythos was "dry" compared to HP (I don't remember what he said exactly but I do remember him saying that HP was better than CON and LOTR)!

Since I can't stick an embeded video on here, try this link to express my feelings:

Bearhugs!
